Rivel noticed a new fact while caressing Ilyd’s left hand.

“The ring? I sold it.”

Her voice sounded light and carefree. Rivel turned his incredulous gaze toward Ilyd.

“It’s true.”

When had that been? Probably after losing their child, during the time Claudius was utterly obsessed with his conquest wars.

Ilyd had organized a charity event to aid wounded soldiers and offered up the wedding ring still on her left ring finger. She even had a perfectly reasonable excuse—that she was thinking of His Imperial Majesty the Emperor and the soldiers suffering on the front lines.

The ring slipped off her finger surprisingly easily, leaving behind only a clearly defined straight mark that hinted at the duration of her marriage.

The mark where the ring had once sat lasted longer than expected, but now it had faded so much that one could shrug indifferently, wondering if anything had ever been there at all.

Afterward, the whereabouts of the wedding ring remained unknown. Even Claudius, upon returning from the battlefield, never bothered to ask about the empty space on Ilyd’s left ring finger. She assumed he simply didn’t care and therefore let it go.

Would silver suit it better than gold? And perhaps a colored gemstone rather than a colorless one—if it matched the green of the gemstone in the necklace he was searching for.

‘Will I someday fully belong in this space that is now empty?’

Rivel pressed his lips softly against the ring finger he’d been caressing for so long. The unspoken wish would remain only in his heart—so that you wouldn’t notice it.
