“Just thinking money can do everything. Given that Viscount Diobe falls flat at the sight of gold and jewels, Selina must be no different, having inherited that trait.”

“No matter how annoying or unpleasant, refer to her by name only. After all, she’s serving His Majesty.”

“…Your Majesty, I just frowned. Can you see my expression?”

“It’s too dark to see clearly.”

“Then I’ll turn on more lights… That’s not the point, is it? If her behavior was at least tolerable, I would treat her with the proper respect. I understand it’s not easy to adapt to life in the royal household. I also stumbled and learned from my mistakes at first. But she doesn’t try to follow even the basic etiquette, so how can I view her kindly? She acts as if the palace is her bedroom, always taking the best for herself, never properly greeting anyone. Before being a noble, one should be a human being first, not even bowing to the Empress…”

Lynette’s built-up frustrations erupted like a machine gun. Eilidh patted Lynette’s hand to calm her down.

“I’ll take care of it properly.”

“As if she would listen. If she had any sense, she wouldn’t be behaving so arrogantly around the palace…”

A light sigh finally escaped Lynette’s lips. Eilidh spoke with a seemingly unaffected, calm voice.

“I’m really fine. If I think of them as irrelevant to me, it’s easier.”
Lynette bit her lips silently. How could they say it doesn’t matter? The humiliation of the Empress by those people had long crossed the line. Every time Eilidh said she was fine, Lynette felt her heart burn with anger.

“That’s why, Lynette, I really need to sleep now.”

“Alright. But before that, I have one last report for today.”

Lynette’s voice dropped significantly. She leaned in to whisper in Eilidh’s ear.

“I’ve heard rumors that His Majesty the Emperor is preparing for war again. Several units have already been moved to the western region.”

“The west? That would be Rosin, right? It has remained neutral and avoided war so far…”

Cleodius’s greed seemed boundless. Despite having conquered numerous city-states and small countries in wars started by the previous emperor, Cleodius wanted more.

‘He must be scouting mercenaries again.’

Eilidh clenched her fists tightly, wrinkling her white nightgown deeply.

For centuries, the western continent maintained peace through a treaty that reduced the size of each country’s army. However, it was merely a promise relying on the conscience and goodwill of each country’s leaders.

The Astrid Empire was the first to break this treaty, starting to annex neighboring small countries under the guise of protection.

But since reducing armies was one thing and increasing them instantly was another, they turned to mercenary groups roaming the northern region of the empire.

Hired with money and leaving cleanly after the job, relationships built on monetary transactions had no lingering feelings. How convenient.

Under Cleodius, contracting skilled mercenary groups had almost become routine.

Eilidh decided to exploit this opportunity. Her plan was to win over the mercenary groups contracted by the royal family. It had to be done naturally, smoothly.

She quietly lay down in bed. Lynette dimmed the lights in the room even more, ensuring that even if Eilidh woke up suddenly, she could still see faintly.

Then she placed a headache medicine and a glass of water on the small bedside table.

“Have sweet dreams, Your Majesty.”

Unsure if her words would be heard, Lynette murmured quietly as she closed the bedroom door.

Walking slowly through the hallway, the dim lights of the Empress’ palace gradually became visible. Outside the window, the guards patrolled.

Could they live for the Empress? Right now, even one person by Eilidh’s side was desperately needed.

The current maids of the Empress’ palace had been with Eilidh since she was a Crown Princess. Lynette hoped they would remain in the Empress’ palace until the end, swearing loyalty to Eilidh.

Leaning against the corridor wall, Lynette felt the cold, hard surface. Her body stiffened involuntarily.

Was it when she was ten? Her family’s fortunes had collapsed, all due to her father’s overextension in business.

On the day her father sold their last title of nobility and they were about to be thrown onto the streets, the first person to reach out to them was Eilidh’s mother.

“Come here. Eilidh, say hello to Lynette.”

She vividly remembered their awkward first greeting. For both Eilidh and Lynette, it was the first time they had someone they could call a ‘friend.’

Despite the difference in status, Eilidh’s mother, the Countess of Melpiram, never treated Lynette as just a maid or servant. She was officially Eilidh’s companion and grew up like sisters.

It was because of Lynette’s mother’s last will, asking to ensure Lynette’s future if she passed away. The Countess’s expression when telling this story was sadly subdued.
However, due to Count Melpiram, Eilidh’s father, who insisted on formality, Lynette had to address her as ‘Miss’ in official settings. But when they were alone, they invariably called each other by their names and transformed into friends who whispered secrets.

Lynette had been with Eilidh since the Melpiram mansion, making her not only a friend but also the most reliable family-like figure for Eilidh.

But now, she was the only ‘Melpiram’ left for Eilidh.

Everyone in the empire knew about the annihilation of Eilidh’s family, the Counts of Melpiram, under the accusation of treason.

Nobles supporting the Emperor presented evidence of the betrayal. Though the evidence was full of fabrications and coercion, Cleodius seemed uninterested in verifying its truth.

He simply allowed the Melpirams to be pushed to their demise, as if wishing for their permanent disappearance from the empire.

Only Eilidh managed to escape the accusation. There was nothing in the fabricated evidence pointing towards her.

As if she was never the target from the beginning.

Even the nobles raising their voices did not object to this particular aspect.

They only demanded Eilidh be deposed from her position as the Empress and exiled. However, Cleodius neither killed nor expelled her.

The guilt of being the sole survivor slowly swelled within Eilidh.

Only Eilidh and Lynette remained of the people from the Melpiram mansion.

It was uncertain when the Emperor might change his mind and turn the sword against them. To survive, one had to bow down and avoid disturbing his mood.

But how long must Eilidh endure this humiliation? Sometimes it’s said that it’s better to die a dignified death than to suffer humiliation, but…

There is no honorable death.

Did the Melpiram, who raised their voice for the people, shine brighter after death?

Walking on a glass ceiling, the days of being grateful for survival were precarious and fragile.

Yet, she couldn’t just stand still in fear.

Eilidh, unable to sleep, slowly blinked in the darkness. As the sleepless nights lengthened, she fantasized about avenging Cleodius.

The Emperor’s position and power, everything he treasured most, she would shatter to pieces.

‘It’s you who will crumble.’

Each time she muttered this to herself, the back of her hand on her forehead grew hot. Eilidh forced her eyes shut, trying to fall asleep by force.

Hoping for a night without nightmares, just for today.

When the male lead is punished by carrying the female lead’s child and having periods like a woman

“I’ve given birth to two children for you, yet you still think about him.

Was I nothing but his substitute to you from beginning to end?”
