“No matter how I think about it, His Majesty the Emperor is going too far.”

The bedroom was appropriately dim, light enough to distinguish whether someone nearby was a stranger or a maid.

Eilidh stood under the right lighting, receiving the bustling attention of Lynette.

The soft touch of the nightgown flowed down Eilidh’s body.

Though it was a task normally done by maids, Lynette seemed genuinely upset about the day’s events. Whenever such incidents occurred, Lynette deliberately attended to Eilidh’s evening needs.

Knowing her feelings well, Eilidh chose to quietly listen to Lynette’s complaints. However, one must always be careful about what they say in the palace. Eilidh softly reminded her.

“Lynette, there are many ears listening.”

“But it’s just us here, Your Majesty. I want to speak frankly. Strictly speaking, shouldn’t Selina be living quietly in the palace, especially in the Empress’ palace? She’s a ‘shadow,’ she should act like one… How dare she behave so recklessly?”

Lynette, the head maid, seemed very upset, her brows furrowed in the light. Eilidh noted her deep frown and gave a wry smile.

In truth, Lynette’s displeasure was more directed at Claudius, but as a head maid, she couldn’t openly criticize the Emperor.

Lynette let out a suppressed sigh.

Being in charge of the entire Empress’ palace, she was naturally sensitive to these issues.

In the palace, while there are those who mess up a room, there are others who clean up. And most of those who mess up rarely consider the effort and inconvenience of the cleaners.

Today, the Emperor and Selina had unnecessarily occupied a room in the Empress’ palace, causing a mess. As a result, Lynette had to waste unnecessary manpower and time.

It was a room that had already been cleaned and arranged in the morning!

Lynette had scolded the guards at the entrance of the Empress’ palace, but what fault did they have? How could they possibly stop the Emperor coming with his beloved mistress?

Lynette was the one who ended up frustrated. If she couldn’t manage the Empress’ palace properly, it would reflect poorly on Eilidh.

With Eilidh already being viewed with a mix of pity and subtle contempt, if the Empress’ palace appeared disorganized, how would that look?

With the Emperor openly favoring Selina, rumors of the Empress’ declining authority were enough to make Lynette tense. If possible, she wanted to find the source of these rumors and shake them up like dust on a rainy day.

Lynette, about to sigh deeply, stopped herself. In such a situation, the most suffocated and heartbroken person must be the Empress.

Having been with Eilidh for nearly twenty years, counting the Melfiram mansion and now the palace, Lynette knew Eilidh’s wishes and desires just by a glance.

How much must she be boiling inside? Unable to sigh in front of her, Lynette composed herself and spoke in a bright voice.

“Your Majesty, I shall comb your hair.”

The comb glided smoothly through the hair, moving up and down without tangling. Eilidh’s bright silver hair shined in the faint light.

Lynette remembered the sight of Eilidh and Claudius at the coronation ceremony. Eilidh’s silver hair naturally complemented Claudius’s flashy golden locks. They seemed a well-matched pair standing together.

Though it felt like a marriage of convenience, their relationship was fairly stable.

Until that day…

Lynette’s careful combing had stopped without her realizing. She stared blankly at the comb lying in the wave of silver.
Startled by Lynette’s sudden pause, Eilidh called out her name curiously.

“Lynette?”

“Ah, sorry. I got distracted for a moment…”

Eilidh lightly smiled and patted Lynette’s hand, which was busily combing her hair.

“Thank you, Lynette.”

“It’s just my job.”

“The room was all set since this morning and then it got completely messed up. You must have had to redo everything from changing the bed sheets to cleaning the floor.”

Lynette realized that Eilidh was aware of everything. Eilidh thoroughly understood the struggles of the maids and servants, from managing the maids to overseeing the laborious tasks of the housemaids. She always made sure to receive reports about them, believing that managing the maids was part of her duties as the Empress.

Thanks to this, the Empress’ palace had gained a reputation in the royal household as being both demanding and comfortable to work in. The same salary under the kind and gentle Empress was preferable, as it was easier on both body and mind.

“Lately, even the girls serving Selina don’t know their place, acting so haughtily. If she becomes the Empress, you’ll have to manage those girls too…”

“Do I look like I’ll eat Miss Selina alive?”

“Of course not! But… thanks to her, the Diobe Viscount has even moved to a new mansion. The front gate is bustling with people trying to bribe him.”

“I heard something about that. Noble households’ servants loitering with all kinds of packages and boxes, right?”
