As always, seated gracefully across the table, Elizabeth issued a brief command.

“Stand up and sit opposite me. Unfortunately, you don’t have much time left. You must hurry—if you wish to save both your sister and yourself.”

Christine. The sudden mention of that name doused her feverish mind like cold water.

Though her whole body ached, she forced herself upright and took the seat facing Elizabeth.

Elizabeth, who had silently observed Merche’s every move until now, finally spoke.

“A clever child like you should have already grasped the situation by now. You know this isn’t a prison, and that it was none other than I who pulled you out of it. I trust you’ve figured that much out already. Is that alright?”

“Yes. I understand, Lord Komeo.”

“I’ll be brief. I’ve secretly taken you and your sister away from Genovefa and brought you to one of my private residences. I’ll spare your life—leave this place with Duke Karla of Beneum.”

“…Christine. Will she come with me as well?”

“Hmm. That was my intention, but unfortunately, your sister refused him.”

Merche’s expression darkened instantly.

Her hands, clasped tightly over her knees, trembled faintly before gradually stilling.

“You may speak with your sister yourself first. But now, Merche, you must give me your answer. What will you do? If you’d rather be recaptured by Genovefa and die, then so be it. I won’t stop you.”
