Lucena scratched her head. Come to think of it, she had just now realized that after fleeing the academy, she hadn’t sent Bolton any word at all.

‘So you remembered me after all.’

He easily could have forgotten her, yet it seemed he’d been thinking of her from time to time.

Strangely enough, tears welled up in her eyes. Swallowing the surge of emotion, Lucena turned her gaze toward the gatekeeper.

They were staring fixedly at the sight of a lady perched atop the wall, clearly astonished.

“I’m sorry, but she really is my friend. Please let her in.”

Lucena pleaded, but they exchanged uneasy glances and quickly shook their heads.

“Apologies, miss, but without Young Master’s permission, no one may enter—not even your friend.”

“That’s right. Even if she were the elder young master’s former sweetheart, we couldn’t possibly open the gate… Why’d you poke me?”

The speaking gatekeeper glared at his companion, who had just jabbed him sharply. The latter held a finger to his lips as a warning to watch his words.

What on earth did that mean?

Lucena perked up her ears with keen interest, and the gatekeeper shot his colleague a fierce look, as if to say it was all his fault.

“Why’ve you been acting like this all along? Did I say something wrong? She was the elder young master’s partner at the last banquet, wasn’t she?”

“Idiot! Don’t you know that in a Grand Ducal house, watching your tongue is a matter of life and death?”

“It’s Young Master who’s in the wrong! Right after the banquet, he brought home another prospective bride and banned all outsiders from entering. That was going too far.”
