Logan Redford glared at her with eyes that seemed to accuse her of asking despite already knowing. She shot back, “If you know what that resentful look means, then why are you even asking?”
Their pointless staring contest, having just begun, ended when one of the knights cleared his throat.
“Get in the carriage first.”
Logan took Sydney’s hand and headed toward the carriage. As if on cue, one of the knights opened the door, and before she could protest, Logan firmly grasped her waist and lifted her inside.
It all happened in the blink of an eye. Flustered by this unexpected act of chivalry—her first ever—she involuntarily let out a small “Ah!” Just as she was about to scold him for his audacity, Logan gave her a stern look and gestured pointedly toward the seat with his eyes.
Over Logan’s shoulder, she saw the knights mounting their horses. It seemed they really were departing immediately, just as he’d said.
Hardly had she gathered the hem of her dress and seated herself when Logan claimed the spot beside her and rapped his knuckles against the carriage wall. With the crack of the coachman’s whip, the carriage jolted into motion.
Once the carriage reached a steady pace, Sydney turned fully toward Logan and spoke.
“Captain.”
“Logan.”
“Then, as your fiancée, I’ll say this.”
It was easier to confront him as his fiancée than as his subordinate. Sydney vented her grievances in an almost scolding tone.
“A moment ago, the Redford knights—not that I expected them to go on high alert against outsiders—stood there like a disorganized mob, merely blinking blankly. I was even trying to restrain myself and just glare politely since we were meeting for the first time, but Logan, why did you take your temper out on me instead of those useless louts?”
“Damn it! If that’s how you feel, you should’ve just cursed me out or kicked me like you normally do.”
