“Are you apologizing for denying you were Marien? Or for not making excuses?”

Her apology was met immediately with sharp, biting reproach. Understandable, really—her subordinate had spent the night with her superior under a false identity and then flatly denied it until the very end.

Sydney clasped her hands together and confessed her guilt.

“Neither. If I could have hidden the fact that I’m a woman, I would have done anything. What I’m truly sorry for… is deceiving you, Captain.”

“So you intended to deceive me to the very end.”

Logan let out a hollow chuckle, then fell silent, utterly speechless.
