The carriage racing along Marcel’s seaside came to a halt. The hotel doorman opened the carriage door and extended his hand to Sydney.

Slightly flustered, Sydney remembered she was wearing a dress and accepted his assistance.

Armand Hotel.

Visiting as a guest at this famous hotel, which had branches across the entire continent—Sydney recalled the time she had dropped by to investigate a murder case.

“Sydney, what’s wrong?”

“Nothing. But why are we here?”

“Well… just to welcome the new year in style.”

Sydney, scanning the hotel lobby, asked again.

“What exactly do you mean by ‘in style’?”

“Well, we’ll have dinner at the hotel restaurant, then have some drinks at the bar….”

Victoria’s voice trailed off as she gazed into empty space. The moment a hotel attendant opened the elevator’s iron gate, she quickly stepped inside.

“Sydney, hurry up.”

Sydney followed Victoria’s beckoning hand and boarded the elevator. As it began to move, Sydney resumed the conversation.

“But… those are things you could do at home too.”

“You never know—you might meet someone new in an unfamiliar place.”

The young women in the elevator giggled, covering their mouths at Victoria’s fanciful remark.

With such a lack of vigilance… Sydney looked around at the women and remarked,

“Normally… people like that are far more likely to get murdered.”

An instant silence fell over the elevator. Victoria, looking embarrassed, tugged at Sydney’s arm and whispered,

“Sydney, why do you have to say such grim things…?”

“That’s reality.”

*Ding.* The needle pointed to the 7th floor, and the elevator stopped.

Sydney gave a light nod to the people frozen like stone and stepped out.

Emerald green carpet covered the black marble floor. The walls were paneled with dark mahogany, and antique candelabras with glass shades provided a soft, ambient glow.

Sydney checked both the bar where alcohol was served and the emergency stairs before entering the restaurant. Even as she was guided by the staff, her eyes remained alert.

“You’re on vacation right now.”

“Oh.”

Only after Victoria’s reprimand did Sydney finally stop her vigilant behavior. The attendant led them to a window seat.

After they sat down and placed their orders, Victoria murmured to herself,

“The ocean really is beautiful.”

The moon’s reflection shimmered on the dark sea. Each ripple glittered like silver scales dancing.

The nighttime sea…

How long had it been since she last enjoyed such leisure and luxury? Sydney gave a wry smile and murmured,

“…You’re right.”

“Has it really been six years? Since we last sat across from each other like this for a meal.”

Sydney corrected Victoria’s mistaken memory.

“I saw you often while I was at the military academy, so this meal together… it’s only been four years.”

“It’s different. I’ve always wanted to sit like this, both of us wearing dresses… sharing a meal.”

Victoria puffed out her cheeks and pouted. Even the habit of gently tapping her fork… was just as she’d been as a child.

Sydney gestured with her eyes toward the carrots and parsley Victoria had pushed to one side of her plate.

“Victoria Orwello, eat your vegetables too.”

“The vegetables don’t like me.”

Is that how it’s going to be? Sydney tilted her water glass to take a sip, then set it down and issued a warning.

“Then… I suppose the alcohol won’t like me either?”

The message was clear: if she didn’t eat her vegetables, she shouldn’t even think about drinking at the bar. Even glaring at Sydney with glaringly obvious dissatisfaction would be useless.

Sydney never spoke nonsense—and always kept her word.

“That’s so unfair.”

Victoria grumbled while poking at her vegetables with her fork, then defiantly stuffed all the carrots and parsley into her mouth.

After the meal ended and their black tea arrived,

Victoria kept her eyes fixed on Sydney even as she sipped her tea.

“Vicky, why are you staring like that?”

“It’s strange. When I haven’t seen you for a while… and then see you again like this… your face looks completely unfamiliar.”

Victoria glanced out the window, then back at Sydney. Sydney tapped her earring lightly and explained,

“That’s the secret of this artifact. It causes ‘prosopagnosia’… making others unable to remember my face.”

“So that’s why. That really is a fascinating ability.”

Victoria kept exclaiming in amazement, then pulled a key from her handbag.

“I reserved the hotel’s penthouse just for tonight.”

Victoria was Lady Orwello, daughter of Duke Orwello—so of course she could stay in the penthouse. But at least not here in Marcel.

That was because the Orwello ducal family owned a townhouse, luxury apartments, and numerous properties in Marcel already.

“Vicky, why do you need the penthouse?”

“Because I want to spend good time with the most important person… and that’s worth more than money.”

“Well then… good job.”

Victoria’s eyes widened like a startled rabbit, and she just moved her lips without speaking.

“I thought you’d scold me for reckless spending. You’re really different today… You don’t seem like the Sydney Warden I know.”

“So… you dislike it?”

“Dislike it? I’m so happy I could cry.”

Victoria shook her head emphatically, then burst into soft laughter. Sydney followed suit, letting out a quiet chuckle.

The moon had hidden behind the clouds, leaving only scattered stars visible; the sea had merged with the darkness, becoming indistinguishable.

But that was fine—she was with an old friend.

“Hey, Sydney. I have a really great older male cousin.”

“Oh?”

Thinking Sydney’s reaction wasn’t too negative, Victoria clapped her hands and raised her voice.

“What luck! My cousin just happens to… Goodness, there couldn’t be a better girl to meet on a night like this.”

“Hmm, so?”

“So! I thought the three of us could have a nice time together. Realistically speaking, two girls alone would be dangerous.”

Victoria shrugged helplessly. After a brief pause, Sydney spoke calmly.

“Could it be… you’re trying to introduce me to your cousin?”

“Is that not allowed?”

“It wouldn’t be hard to meet him, but… ‘Sydney Warden’ is known as a man… so it would be awkward.”

Noble society was extremely insular. When meeting someone new, it was only natural to ask others about that person.

If my name came up that way… Logan—and the entire Imperial Army—would learn I was actually a woman.

“Hmm. In novels, when this happens, the woman gives a fake name… then explains the situation later.”

That’s a good idea. We probably won’t meet again anyway. Sydney spoke the name that came to mind.

“Marien… Marien would be good.”

“Great! From now on, I’ll call you Marien.”

Sydney gave a quiet smile and lifted her teacup. But just before bringing it to her lips, she asked Victoria,

“By the way… why did you book a hotel room in the first place?”

“Marien, what do you think about unmarried adult men and women consenting to be intimate?”

From age fourteen to twenty, Sydney had lived as a man. She’d heard plenty of crude jokes exchanged among men.

She didn’t believe all those stories—

but it was clear that, for men, lust and love were separate matters. Concerned for Victoria, Sydney chose her words carefully.

“If there’s mutual consent… still, one should be cautious about such things.”

“But to be cautious… you’d need to have some experience first…”

“Must you? That doesn’t sound right.”

“What if you get married and your husband can’t… perform properly?”

Sydney thought of Logan, who probably still couldn’t marry due to that exact issue—not that it was his fault…

“If you absolutely needed an heir… that would put you both in an awkward position.”

“That’s why people these days check beforehand.”

“Vicky, you’re not seriously asking me to test your cousin, are you?”

Victoria glanced at Sydney warily and mumbled evasively,

“Of course not! This is just… preparing for a hypothetical situation. Yes, that’s all.”

Just as Sydney was about to press for clarification, a restaurant attendant approached.

“Are you Lady Orwello by any chance?”

“Yes?”

“A telegram has arrived.”

He handed Victoria the telegram and stepped away. As she read it, her cheeks swelled like a pufferfish.

“What happened?”

“My cousin says he’s too busy to come. He suggests we go ahead and enjoy ourselves.”

Victoria ripped the telegram to shreds and stood up. The two women headed straight for the hotel.

[This is the timeline separator]

“I looove you sooo much, Maariieen!”

“I know. I love Vicky too.”

The same exchange had been going on for an hour.

Whether unaware or simply unconcerned, Sydney replied each time with the same earnest expression.

Victoria, barely able to hold herself upright, slumped onto the table and babbled,

“I’m sooo sleepy…”

“You can sleep.”

The moment Sydney finished speaking, Victoria gave a drowsy smile and closed her eyes.

I should get her home. Sydney glanced at the sleeping Victoria and drained her final glass.

*Jingle.*

The sound of the doorbell made Sydney lift her gaze.

Two men entered, scanning the bar as if searching for someone.

But they didn’t look unfamiliar.

Sydney blinked, trying to sharpen her blurry focus—and recognized the faces of the men walking toward her.

Logan Redford and Ernest Holden. Even upon second glance, there was no doubt.

Startled, her lips moved unconsciously.

“Why are they coming this way?”

She jumped at the languid tone of her own voice—finally realizing she was drunk.

And to make matters worse, Logan was staring right at her, walking closer with piercing intensity.

His gaze felt so powerful it seemed the artifact wouldn’t even work.

But then—

“I’m Ernest Holden, Victoria’s older cousin.”

Hearing Ernest’s introduction, Sydney finally relaxed. Normally, he would’ve…

—blabbered some nonsense like that. So what about Logan? Sydney raised her eyes to look at him.

Why are you glaring? Sydney narrowed her eyes, mimicking Logan, then gave a quiet chuckle.

It was ridiculous—her own audacity in copying her superior’s expression.

She expected he wouldn’t stay quiet with that obnoxious personality of his—yet at the same time, she thought, what can you really do with a drunk woman?

Resigned to whatever might happen, Sydney tilted her chin slightly upward. And then the arrogant Logan introduced himself with a charming smile.

“I’m Logan Redford. And you are, my lady?”

How utterly amusing.

The great Logan Redford didn’t recognize her—and even called her “my lady”…

Sydney grinned mischievously, eyes twinkling like a playful brat.

“I’m Marien. I was just wondering what to do… since this friend of mine is completely drunk.”

“You’re friends with Victoria?”

At Ernest’s question, Sydney lowered her eyes and suppressed a laugh. She suddenly recalled Victoria’s earlier words—and could easily guess Logan’s likely reaction.

He’d probably scold her with something like, “Are you suicidal?” or “Do you have even the slightest common sense?”

Sydney stared straight at Logan and said with a slight pout,

“Yes, we’re friends. Hoping to meet someone new in an unfamiliar place… Oh dear, am I drunk?”

“You certainly are.”

“With not even the slightest caution?”
