“It is similar.”

“If Earl Hamilton… used those 6,000 feons as Marien’s leash?”

“You suspect he intended to control Miss Marien using that as a pretext?”

“Yes. Just as he himself had been controlled by his wife’s and father-in-law’s power and wealth, perhaps he expressed his resentment toward Marien through the same behavior.”

“So you’re assuming Earl Hamilton equated Marien with himself.”

Sydney slowly nodded. Yet her brow remained furrowed, as if still chasing her thoughts.

“For that to work, Marien would have needed to experience the taste of money and power herself. That’s likely why he secured her a job at Cielo and gave her expensive gifts—just as Princess Catherine did for the earl.”

Sydney flinched mid-sentence, suddenly realizing she’d delved too deeply into someone’s psychology.
