It was literally the pain of having one’s heart torn to shreds.

Having been stabbed by a knife before, Ermedilin knew all too well what kind of horrific agony it entailed.

Thus, the moment Pelio stepped in front of her, she fervently prayed—over and over—that the blade would turn toward her instead of him.

From the instant Ermedilin saw the blade pull out from his back, she nearly fainted—but she clung desperately to her senses, watching Pelio force a smile toward her despite his broken, battered body.

She had heard from Louise that he was safe. She longed to visit him and see his condition with her own eyes, but thinking of Duke Baptistian made that impossible.

She felt as though she’d gladly undergo an out-of-body experience—just to let her soul visit his room.

‘Why? Why go this far for me?’

The heat of that cheek against her palm and the chill of his tears still felt vividly real.

‘Even though you suspect this body had something to do with your mother’s death, why go to such lengths for me?’

Pelio’s eyes, as he knelt by the bedside and looked up at Ermedilin, were utterly desperate.

In that moment, Ermedilin found his appearance sacred—because his gaze held a desperate reverence, as if he were facing a god.

In Ermedilin’s mind flashed the white handkerchief she still kept close to her chest and the brooch pinned to his left shoulder.

She felt as if pieces of a puzzle were about to click into place—but Ermedilin, still nursing the wounds of heartbreak, instinctively refused to pursue the thought further.

‘Don’t jump to conclusions. He’s a pro-Imperial noble, after all. He might simply prioritize loyalty to the Imperial family over personal grudges.’

Ermedilin deliberately cleared her mind, trying to think of something else.
