Facing Valière’s recent changes, Henri took time to reflect on his own actions.

After all, hadn’t he himself undergone great changes since becoming emperor?

Thus, he absolutely wanted to avoid letting his feelings shift merely because his lover had changed.

So he pondered deeply.

Through countless worries and assumptions about Valière’s transformation, he sought ways to firmly maintain their relationship.

Yet even amidst all these thoughts, there was one thing he had completely failed to consider:

that Valière’s feelings toward him might have changed as well.

Henri never considered that if his own heart could change upon seeing Valière’s altered self, then Valière’s heart could just as easily change upon seeing his own transformed self.

One might call it a selfish, self-centered perspective—and they wouldn’t be wrong.

But the real reason Henri had pushed that thought aside wasn’t out of mere self-absorption.

It was simply because even the mere idea of his lover’s heart changing hurt so deeply it felt as though his own heart were being torn apart.

Not even his mother’s cowardice—handing over the decision of her son’s life or death to another just to save herself on death’s doorstep—nor his father’s coldness—telling him to survive on his own amid half-brothers threatening to kill him while he stood there after a suicide attempt—had ever wounded Henri this deeply.

His heart felt as if it might stop from the pain at any moment, yet documents awaiting his signature still piled high before him.

Henri gritted his teeth and began reading through the papers laid out in front of him,

thinking he needed some distance from Valière for now to sort out his thoughts.
