“That, for several hours?”

“Aris, miss.”

“I didn’t know you liked reading so much, sister. You never do that at home?”

“I have a lot of work to do.”

I spoke calmly, causing Aris to frown.

I muttered somewhat sadly, “I haven’t had personal time for years because I’ve been taking care of the family’s affairs. You wouldn’t know since you often attend parties. I really love reading books. The library had a rare book by author Dupeong, and I was really happy when Count Hubert suggested I visit there. I planned to read just one book and borrow it, but I ended up sitting there for hours. I’m sorry for startling you.”

“Wait a minute. That’s not what I’m talking about.”

“But don’t worry. I borrowed many books for you too. Once you open the first page, you’ll understand how I feel. The story of a young boy traveling through deserts and seas was so fascinating. Dupeong is already known for his eloquent style in describing landscapes, but this new work is even better! I borrowed all his books despite the librarian’s disapproving looks. You won’t be mad that I read Dupeong’s new book first, right?”

I rambled on without giving her a chance to interject, and Aris looked frustrated.

Internally, I smirked.

‘Naturally. She wouldn’t know where to start criticizing.’

Aris always needs to be the center of attention.

With her ambitious nature, my comment about being busy with the family’s affairs while she was merely having fun must have irked her.

Just as Aris was about to retort, Emmerun burst out.

“That’s not it!”

“…”

“It’s not about Dupeong or whatever! Why do you keep talking about irrelevant things! Eigrain, were you really at the library?”

“Yes.”

Her question came back, urgent.

“And the prince?”

“The prince?”

I widened my eyes deliberately.

“Yes! The fifth prince who came with the delegation!”

I pretended to ponder before responding, “I sent him a gift.”

I showed a hint of confusion.

‘It sounds silly even to me.’

Predictably, Emmerun stood up abruptly.

“Is that all?”

“That’s what you told me to do, right?”

I looked around, feigning ignorance.

‘I wish I appeared innocent.’

As I was thinking this, Emmerun spoke almost angrily.

“A gift is not…!”

She stopped short of saying something unsavory, opening her fan with a brisk motion. The wind blew harshly.

“Who would have thought she was such a simpleton!”

She turned to Hubert.

“Count, isn’t this a big problem? The king would have given some prior instructions, but he only received a trivial gift package! Moreover, the gift was just for show.”

She lowered her voice at the end, but those nearby could still hear.

Aris, who was initially skeptical, turned pale at her words.

Looking at me as if I were useless, Aris shouted irritably.

“Georgiana!”

Georgiana, who had been shrinking in on herself, reluctantly stepped forward.

“Yes, miss.”

“What happened? You said you didn’t see sister.”

“I didn’t see her.”

Aris glanced at me.

“But sister says she was reading in the library?”

“That’s…”

“Speak up. Did you really not see sister?”

Georgiana looked cornered like a trapped fox.

“I… I think I might have seen her.”

I almost burst out laughing at her feeble response.

Georgiana, despite her innocent appearance, was not clever enough to handle this situation flexibly.

Aris’s eyebrows twitched.
“Did you see her or not?”

“I tried following her, moving around, but I couldn’t keep up in the end…”

“Are you serious with that answer? Speak clearly!”

“Enough.”

Aris, who was berating Georgiana like she was going to devour her, closed her mouth.

Hubert, who had his arm around Aris, spoke gently.

“The royal library is notoriously complex. Don’t be too hard on your poor maid.”

Georgiana looked up at Hubert with grateful eyes, while Aris’s face contorted in displeasure.

“How can you say that? Do you think I’m tormenting her? I was just so shocked and confused…”

Tears welled up in her big eyes. It was astonishing how quickly she could cry. I marveled inwardly at her exceptional body fluid control abilities.

‘She truly has the makings of a con artist.’

“There’s no need to get so heated.”

Hubert dabbed Aris’s eyes with a handkerchief.

“Don’t stress yourself; you might collapse again.”

Aris’s expression softened at his gentle words.

Then his gaze turned towards me.

Our eyes briefly met.

“Eigrain.”

“Yes.”

“It’s better for you to go to your room.”

As always, his voice was gentle. Soft, yet somehow detached.

Whether he believed me or not, it was clear he was disappointed.

‘Damn. He shouldn’t look that disappointed yet.’

Despite my internal thoughts, I made a heartbroken face, as if my world had shattered.

Back in my room, I drenched my face and cheeks with water from the bottle.

“Phew, I’m lucky I wasn’t caught.”

Jenny, who had been catching her breath, widened her eyes at me.

“What are you doing, miss?”

“Huh? Pretending to cry.”

“What?”

“Does it look like I’ve been weeping sorrowfully?”

Confused, Jenny came closer and shook her head.

“It’s just wet.”

“Really?”
