The Empress Dowager and the Count looked at Mercedes with peculiar expressions.

Mercedes felt as if she were suffocating; all the air seemed to crush her.

Her heart raced wildly, and trauma from the abuse she had endured just half a year ago surged through her body, leaving her trembling. Just maintaining her composure while suppressing it was overwhelming.

“Actually, I haven’t had my health checked recently… I came here fearing I might trouble His Imperial Majesty. Her Imperial Majesty, during her time as Crown Princess, made a small mistake…”

“What kind of mistake?”

Before Carlos could intervene or Mercedes could speak, the Count and the Empress Dowager swiftly continued their rehearsed dialogue.

At first glance, it seemed a conversation centered on concern—but upon deeper inspection, it neared the accusation that “Mercedes is an unfit Empress.”

Soon after, the Count set down his utensils with a sigh, bowing his head toward the Emperor with a guilty expression, as if he had lost his appetite.

“The Empress has adapted very well here. There is no need for concern, Count.”
