I even thought it might be for the better. Lately, Carlos’s behavior had left me so bewildered I felt I might collapse.

“Why, exactly, are you avoiding me? Why do you pull away and look at me like that? What do you expect from me? After spending our first night together, if you dislike the union, we could simply sleep apart—why not just set a date? What exactly are you trying to do?”

As Carlos listened to her flood of words, he suddenly felt a sharp, crushing pain in his chest.

A wounded glint passed through her eyes—faint, yet Carlos knew it well. He had observed her too closely for too long.

Ah.

I failed to do it right.

Both of us, no—Mercedes suffered more. I waited, hoping for her confession, but in the meantime, my heart became a mess.

I shouldn’t have waited for her confession.

I should have poured out my feelings, seized what I wanted.

I feared that if I spoke my love aloud, it would become real—and that I would have to acknowledge it.

The only wound I should have given her was death… yet I could not manage even my own emotions, and this is what happened.

Carlos gazed at Mercedes, her expression gone blank, the same face she had worn at the beginning.

Clearly expressionless, yet it seemed as if she were suppressing pain. She hadn’t been like this before.

Then now, she can show emotion—but she suppresses it out of habit.
