Carlos was dressed today in a dark suit with a hint of green.

“You are truly… beautiful. My dear.”

“Thank you. Nadia would appreciate it. Thanks to my information, I’ve made a proper mark in the capital.”

“I hear your friendship with the senior lords is deepening.”

Mercedes laughed at his usual jest.

Soon, the two arrived at the Somerset estate and danced their first dance in the center of the elegant, refined ballroom, conversing with the surrounding nobility.

All praised the Emperor and Empress for their beauty.

After spending time thus, Mercedes spoke to Carlos.

“I shall speak with the maids and mingle with the guests. Your Majesty should attend to your own affairs.”

Her manner seemed cold, as if drawing a line. Carlos nodded with a gentle smile.

He did not entirely misunderstand her heart, so there was no need for anxiety. Still, it stung.

“That is right. The social scene must be led by you.”

And so the two parted.

One might call this time of separation a moment of lowered guard, but Mercedes was grateful to be away from him.

Once the Emperor departed, three new maids approached Mercedes.
