After the investiture ceremony, a banquet was held. Since everyone needed to change their attire after the ceremony, it began as the evening twilight deepened; though it was summer, the night breeze was cool, so the outdoor banquet took place in the elaborately decorated garden.

The air carried the fragrance of flowers and fresh greenery, and countless beautiful lanterns hung everywhere, creating the feeling of stepping into a magical forest.

It was said that, at least for the banquet, it was Carlos who personally presided—not the Empress Dowager.

And not long after the banquet began, Carlos, having changed from his imperial robes into a white suit, and Mercedes, newly adorned once more, made their entrance.

“My heavens…!”

“How beautiful you are!”

“You truly make a magnificent pair.”

Mercedes’s dress was, as always, overwhelming.

As she moved, layers of fabric within her skirt became visible—a rich blue gown layered with fabrics of countless textures and hues, which, when touched by the light of the surrounding lanterns, emitted a rainbow-like shimmer like that of an opal.

And yet, despite the heavy hem, her slender waist was accentuated, and her shoulders and collarbones were revealed in a design that never appeared merely gaudy—rather, it seemed exquisitely refined.

Finally, her hair, softly curled and half-loose, was adorned generously with pearls and fresh flowers.

She looked like a fairy luring men on a summer night.

The Empress Dowager did not attend the banquet, citing fatigue and poor health. After all, the investiture had concluded successfully; there was no issue.

“She’s properly furious, isn’t she?”

Carlos chuckled knowingly as he gazed at the Empress Dowager’s empty seat. Mercedes smiled faintly in agreement.
