Carlos smiled slyly.

“You don’t have to go to the banquet. If you say you want to rest, then rest. If you say you want to play, then play.”

His words, as if he would accommodate her in everything, sounded sweet, yet also strangely too fortunate.

“You must work. Lately, Lord Leo’s complexion is truly terrible.”

“That friend’s complexion has never been good since I met him.”

Carlos was reducing his sleep and working separately the more time he spent with Mercedes. His workload had not decreased at all.

Leo’s complaints were just jokes.

“Oh, right. I’ll announce it soon. You will become my Empress.”

“An announcement? How fortunate…”

Her feelings were strange. It was peculiar to become someone’s wife again, and equally strange that Carlos so readily offered her “status” and “a high position.”

“For you to become my Empress… it feels as if I’ve gained the whole world. Wait a little longer until I make you Empress. I’m sorry.”

His tender words made her heart swell inexplicably.

She smiled faintly. Carlos thought that lately, she had been expressing her emotions quite honestly.

Faintly, but Carlos could notice it—he had observed her that closely.
