Military merit was not something easily gained, and the number of times he swung his sword must be countless.

Mercedes saw him in a slightly different light for the first time.

She had always thought his life remarkable, but imagining him cast onto the battlefield as a boy, she somehow felt he must have been lonely.

Was this sympathy, too, a result of the wall in her heart beginning to crumble? Once it fell, her thoughts scattered helplessly in all directions.

Facing his calm expression, she forcibly pushed the thoughts away.

There was no need to add idle imaginings, to feel pity for him, and to further confuse her unsorted emotions.

“Anyway, enough about your boyhood. You asked if you offended me. Yes. I felt jealous because it seemed you preferred Mrs. Fisher. So I was piqued. Now, how do you intend to mend my heart?”

Carlos laughed lazily.

‘Piqued.’ The word, heard for the first time since becoming emperor, was quite amusing. And this woman’s unexpectedness grew ever more delightful.

She knew she should not find such amusement in someone she would one day have to kill, but Carlos cautiously set that thought aside.

When the time came, he would inevitably act. He had always been a man who placed his goals first. Since his mother’s death, no sentiment had ever stood in the way of his objectives or reason.

So, what harm was there in enjoying a moment of pleasure?

After all, he had already embraced too many deaths; he himself was dying, too. Death had long since become a habit to him, dulling its edge.

“Hmm. I… don’t know how to soothe someone. Um… this sort of thing…”
