Deep eyes, unreadable in emotion, lingered on her face for a long time.

“This… this isn’t right? How dare I touch His Majesty’s cheek… I apologize—.”

As silence stretched, Mercedes, worried that Carlos might be offended or that her touch had been improper, prepared to offer an apology.

At the same time, Carlos came to his senses and smiled, shaking his head.

“Stop with the apologies. Did you learn this style of praise from me? I find it quite pleasant—I’d welcome it more often. Far better than speaking of transactions with unwanted costs.”

“The letter isn’t finished yet… I believe it will be ready by tomorrow afternoon.”

“Leave it with me.”

Carlos kept thinking of the spot on his cheek where her hand had brushed.
