For the past few days, the Empress Dowager had been brimming with confidence.

A few scattered soldiers she had sent as spies had reported that Carlos had left the war-torn region and gone alone to rescue Mercedes.

Since she had ordered them to kill Mercedes immediately, Carlos must surely be out of his mind.

And though the lack of further news had left her slightly uneasy…
