“Kai An. What on earth is this?”

He, too, had not received prior reports, so his expression hardened the moment he saw the condition of the carriage.

When a light was cast upon the dark outline of the carriage, Baron Colon, who had been escorting them nearby, leapt down from his horse.

“My lord. My lady. We have arrived.”

“Good work. Any trouble on the way?”

Kai An asked hurriedly, and the man nodded.

“Yes. We encountered bandits targeting the carriage along the way, but it was nothing serious. Worried that sending a telegram might lead to being tracked, we hurried straight here.”

“Nothing serious?”

Seeing the spear embedded in the carriage, Clodel paled. The butler answered gently.

“It pierced through and lodged into the floor of the carriage. No one was hurt, but since we’d need to stop to either change or repair the carriage, we simply pressed on without halting.”

“The baby…”

Before Clodel could finish her anxious question, the door of the carriage on the opposite side opened.

“My lady!”

It was Hanna, holding the swaddled infant tightly in her arms.

She looked unwell, likely from tension. Clodel’s eyes immediately went to Hanna’s lower abdomen—slightly more rounded than when they’d last met. Cradling the tiny bundle with exceptional care, Hanna walked toward Clodel more slowly and cautiously than ever before.
