In the cabin, where the lighting had been deliberately dimmed and the oil lamp flickered weakly, Clodel felt bewildered.

Kai An’s immense strength had torn her thin dress—designed as a one-piece gown—along with the undergarments beneath, splitting them cleanly down the middle as if ripping paper in half.

Suddenly exposed, Clodel froze in place as though turned to stone.

“Your body is far too cold.”

Regardless of her reaction, Kai An placed a large towel over her head and wrapped her tightly in a blanket.

Though it was midsummer July, the Shenn River flowed rapidly with enough volume to carry a ship, and its water remained icy.

Her body, already emaciated to the bone and utterly devoid of fat, lost heat instantly and vigor drained away.

Even as hypothermia stiffened her limbs and her vision kept flickering between darkness and clarity, she still felt embarrassed by what Kai An had done.

Kai An swiftly bundled her up and laid her down on the bed to rest.

As if to prove this escape had been pre-planned, several hot water bottles had already been placed on the bed.

When she sank her entire body onto the warmly heated bed, the tension she’d held in her hunched shoulders—so tight it hurt—finally released. Her rigid, log-like body softened, and her shallow, rapid breaths gradually eased.

Kai An, whose clothes had been ruined during his treatment for a shoulder injury, wore only trousers and a plain white shirt provided by castle staff. Though soaked himself, he’d draped a towel over his clothes just enough to stop dripping water, and now wedged hot water bottles under Clodel’s armpits before gently massaging her arms and legs, which were stiff but not yet unbendable.

“Haa…”

Each time his large, warm hands firmly gripped her body, sensations that had gradually vanished into an abyss as her temperature dropped now returned one by one.

“Kai An.”
