I Had the Enemy's Baby (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 123
“What brings the Duchess here?”
At the murmured words spoken as if in greeting, the maid’s eyes sparkled.
“Oh my! Is that a letter from Duchess Temnes?”
At the curious tone, Irena shooed her away.
“I’d like to be alone, so please leave. I’ll handle the preparations for receiving guests this afternoon myself.”
The maid showed her disappointment before closing the door and disappearing.
At Valmont Castle, Irena had close friends and her own maidservants. Yet even they had never ventured beyond the castle’s surroundings.
She had wanted to take a somewhat carefree trip, but couldn’t bring herself to speak up, fearing how Duke Vermonde might react. Unexpectedly, however, Duke Vermonde himself ordered her to go alone, promising to assign guards and attendants for her. She quietly rejoiced at this brief taste of freedom—the first she’d ever been granted since birth.
She vaguely guessed it might have something to do with Valkyter.
Her friends who usually accompanied her were also noble-born and notably fair in appearance.
Had they accompanied Irena and Rowen, it would’ve been hard to prevent those noble young ladies—who rarely visited the capital—from attending the royal ball.
Though it was nearly tradition that House Vermonde avoided debutante society in the capital, not every noble retainer of theirs abstained from the debutante season.
The temporary residence they occupied was situated along a broad avenue lined with townhouses of provincial nobles, and people Irena had found through salons assisted her with her daily needs.
Yet wherever Duke Vermonde’s influence reached, Irena remained a puppet moving only as her father wished.
She had to select dresses and jewels, undergo beauty treatments arranged through salons, and daily dance to the tune of Duke Vermonde’s ambitions. Watching his daughter, the Duke smiled contentedly.
