“Was there a conflict regarding a stalking issue?”

The investigating officer looked at me and asked once again.

I was startled and simply nodded. The officer let out a deep sigh and slammed the papers onto the table so hard it made a loud “thud.”

“Hey now. This isn’t your first or second time—is this really what you’ve done? Huh?”

Not the first or second time? Confused by the officer’s words, I turned my bewildered gaze back and forth between the woman and the officer.

“She’s a habitual offender. Seems like she’s switched to another victim this time, but this isn’t something we can just overlook—you understand?”

A habitual offender? Switched to another victim?

I was so stunned my mouth hung open. The woman kept her head bowed low, scratching her thumb cuticle so roughly her knuckles began to bleed.

“So… this isn’t the first time, then?”

When I spoke, the officer—who had been frowning deeply at the woman—nodded.

“Do you happen to have any evidence that this person stalked you?”

“Yes. But since the anti-stalking law hasn’t passed yet, I was waiting to report it a bit later.”

“I see. This person is a repeat offender. Even though the stalking law isn’t in effect yet, you can still file charges for threats or request a temporary restraining order.”

“We want a harsher punishment.”

As the woman listened silently to our exchange, she suddenly began trembling all over and large tears started rolling down her cheeks.
