Because we’d pitched our tent close to the stream, the sound of water and children playing felt quite near.

By the time I finished washing the dishes, it was the hottest part of the day. My suggestion to go to the stream together was briskly turned down. I headed down alone, planning at least to soak my feet.

Seeing the kids playing so enthusiastically in the freezing water—their lips blue from being soaked through—made me cheerful, so I dipped my feet in… only to jerk back in shock and scramble out immediately.

“Mom! You scared me!”

I leapt onto a sun-warmed rock, flapping around like a startled bird. The kids and adults nearby burst into laughter at the sight of me.

How admirable—to be playing in such icy water! In that moment, I suddenly felt genuine respect for them.

Dragging my still-chilly feet back to the tent, I found Ji Seo Jun quietly reading a book.

“Are you really just sitting here reading a book all the way out here?”

“I’m reading precisely because we came to a place like this.”

Ji Seo Jun answered without looking up from his book. Then, all of a sudden, he lifted his head and looked at me.

“You said you’d soak your feet and play in the stream—why’d you come back so fast?”

“You might freeze to death if you stay in there.”

I ducked into the tent and wiggled my icy toes around. Watching me, Ji Seo Jun let out a soft chuckle and turned his eyes back to his book.

“By the way, aren’t you going to tell me where we’re going tomorrow?”

I’d booked the campsite, but Ji Seo Jun had reserved our next accommodation. Every time I asked where he’d booked, he’d just clamped his lips shut.
