Timothy’s car sped past the city center and raced along the winding forest road.
It passed through a state park filled with dense trees and large dogs out for walks, then by a lakeside where people jogged.
After about an hour of driving, watching evergreen trees and summer sunlight flash by amidst the fresh green scenery, the ocean finally came into view far in the distance.

After arriving in Newport, the car kept heading downward, ever downward.
The Newport Peninsula was dotted with luxurious mansions built during the Gilded Age. Passing by the famous summer villa of a railroad tycoon, I naturally thought of Juliet and the Capulet family.
We played music recommended by Jessica at full volume and stopped midway at a shopping street to buy and eat bagels for lunch.
“Mahita!”
Timothy gulped down the bagel Jessica had torn into pieces while driving.
As we chatted about trivial things—boring school life, subjects we’d have to study once we became seniors, and Marina, the crown parrot we’d left with our elderly neighbor—Victor’s villa finally appeared in the distance.
‘Still, I wonder if something’s really going on.’
Victor hadn’t contacted us at all the entire day, not even once, until we arrived in Newport after two hours.

Victor is a literal S-rank physical powerhouse, but he’s also just a kid who has dedicated his entire life since elementary school to football. Watching him deal with the deeply unfair transition era where the world assumes he’s a cheater—even though he played entirely with his own hard-earned human sweat and blood—is devastating. The way he relaxes the moment Juno grabs his cheek and tells him to stop bottling it up shows exactly why she is his ultimate anchor.- I am absolutely screaming at Adrian’s strategic brilliance. The boy realizes Victor has a head start in the “comfortable friend” category, so he literally uses the sudden coastal rainstorm as a cinematic backdrop to draw a massive line in the sand. Juno is out here trying to politely suggest she feels a little “less comfortable” around him lately, and Adrian just delivers a devastating, smooth-as-ice smile and goes: “Well then, that’s good. I don’t want to be just ‘too comfortable’ to you. Unlike how you see McQueen, even if I’m a bit uncomfortable to you… I still want to be seen as a man.” The sheer confidence! Juno’s heart is doing violent backflips, and she is so utterly stunned that a sketchy text message from the occult squad is treated as a literal life raft.
- I am absolutely screaming at the sheer, unhinged protective panic Juno undergoes in this chapter. She delivers this deeply touching, empathetic monologue about understanding Alex’s frustration with the world’s unfair hierarchy, brings them all downstairs like an older cousin trying to cheer them up with cool dungeon souvenirs, and then immediately has to pivot because the trio’s collective single brain cell decides the best course of action is to literally boil an unidentified, extraterrestrial World Tree leaf and ingest it.
