Uncle opened his eyes wide and asked with pure, genuine curiosity.

“We don’t really know much about orchestral concerts, you know. We just came back from school and are so tired we might fall asleep during the concert. So why don’t the four of you enjoy yourselves? We’d rather just hang out together like we used to—maybe play some games or something.”

I could feel Alan staring at me, eyes wide open at my words “the two of us.”

I gave him an encouraging smile.

“Right, Alan?”

Then, under the table, I lightly kicked his sneaker—a signal for him to play along.

“Oh, really…? Alan, do you want to hang out with Juno too?”

Alan looked at me, hesitated for a moment, then nodded.

“Yes. I’d like to leave first.”

“Well, I suppose classical music can be like a sleeping pill for kids. Honestly, just on the way here, we played a ‘Top 300 Pop Songs’ playlist, thinking about what you kids might like!”

Ha ha ha! Dad laughed heartily.

Oh, so the Taylor Swift song we heard in the car was actually chosen with our preferences in mind… I never knew that.

Juno thought she was just playing a tactical game of childhood-friend therapy to extract dungeon secrets, only for Alan to drop the most horrific, world-shattering plot twist imaginable right through a open taxi window. He didn’t just have a generic case of teenage angst or family awkwardness—his parents are literally the scientists who opened the Gates and unleashed the apocalypse upon the earth. The sheer whiplash from eating banana pudding on a wet sidewalk to realizing your childhood friend is carrying the weight of the entire world’s end is insane.
