“You need to break the lid of that jar. We cannot touch it.”
Uhura said excitedly, seeing Stella handle the jar with ease. Earlier, he was fretting over not being able to stop Stella, but now his face flushed with anticipation.
“I need to open it.”
Stella hoped that nothing like a snake would come out of the jar.
“I’ll open it now.”
She said as she touched the jar lid. Ark and Esta were up in a tree, covering their eyes.
Uhura, too, shut his eyes tightly and clenched his fists, resolving to face death bravely if anything happened, rather than fleeing.
Stella took a deep breath and gripped the lid tightly.
“Here goes!”
Hesitating for a moment, Stella then threw the heavy lid with all her might.

Crash!
The thrown lid shattered into pieces upon hitting the pile of fallen stones. Simultaneously, faint characters escaping from the broken jar fragments rose into the air like smoke and vanished in an instant.
For all the tension and fear, the conclusion was anticlimactically simple.
“Is it done? Is it over?”
Stella asked, looking at the broken jar lid with a bewildered expression.
Uhura, who had his eyes tightly shut, walked unsteadily to the broken jar fragments and knelt down. Then, he raised his hands high and shouted.
“The curse’s script has vanished!”
“That’s a relief.”
Stella said, smiling awkwardly as she tried to stand up. Then the ground near where she stood began to undulate.
Thinking the curse had activated belatedly, Stella was about to flee when a cheer stopped her.

“Woah!”
“Long live Stella!”
“The curse is lifted!”
“We are free now!”
Land fairies burst from the ground, numbering at least twenty. They joined hands and circled around Stella, dancing joyfully.
“Long live Stella!”
“Blessings of Terra, the goddess, upon Stella!”
“Blessings of the earth upon Stella!”
Overwhelmed by the sudden appearance of so many fairies and their blessings, Stella felt her body growing lighter. She turned her palms up and down, feeling the change.
“Huh? What?”

“Do you feel the blessing?”
“Do you feel the power?”
Ark and Esta scurried over and hopped onto Stella’s shoulders.
“Yeah, I feel a bit lighter.”
“Now Stella will be very healthy.”
“Yes, Stella will live very long and long.”
Whether it would be true or not, feeling healthy and living long was indeed pleasant to hear.
“But what’s inside it?”
Esta, perched on Stella’s shoulder, craned her neck to peer inside the jar. Stella had been too distracted to notice what was inside the jar until then and leaned over to look.
A faint light was seeping from the jar, but strangely, the inside was not visible. It was not a deep jar, which was odd.

Could it be treasure?
Stella, her heart pounding with excitement and fear, reached into the jar. Her fingertips touched something cold.
Gold!
By the touch alone, Stella was sure the jar contained gold bars. She also felt something like a wooden stick but didn’t pay much attention to it.
“Pull it out.”
Urged by Ark and Esta, who were excitedly jumping on her shoulders, Stella looked at the fairies, then thrust her arm deep into the jar and grasped the hard object, pulling it out with all her might.
Sparkle!
The object, glittering brightly in the sunlight, was,
“A pickaxe?”
It was a pickaxe small enough to fit in one hand. Stella, who had secretly hoped for a precious treasure to emerge from the fairy’s jar, furrowed her brows in surprise at the unexpected appearance of a farming tool. Having never handled such tools in Amalun, where she was a princess, albeit not a well-treated one, the discovery was all the more baffling.
“Wow! A noble pickaxe!”

“So radiant! How is this possible!”
While Stella was noticeably disappointed, the fairies were making a commotion as if they had found a diamond.
“Is this thing valuable?”
Stella asked, still with a furrowed brow. She noticed the pickaxe head was unusually shiny. It seemed to be made of silver rather than iron.
“It’s one of the objects filled with the blessings of the goddess Terra. That it was hidden here! Those wicked land spirits!”
“Land spirits? What are those?”
Stella felt a chill down her spine.
“They look somewhat like us but grow by feeding on the evil energy of the land. The more of them there are, the weaker and deader the land becomes.”
“Do they have black eyes?”
Stella asked, thinking of someone, with a skeptical expression.

“Yes. Like blackberries, dark and round without any whites.”
Ark shuddered at the mere thought.
“And their skin is dark?”
“Yes. Rough and dark like tree bark. Much uglier than us.”
Esta said, and Ark agreed with a clap.
“Do they speak poorly?”
“They can only mimic human speech. They don’t really understand it. Ugly and stupid.”
“Ha! Then Ark, you’re a land spirit too. Ugly and dumb.”
“Hey!”
As Ark and Esta bickered, the other land fairies chuckled.

Stella realized that the beings she met in Amalun were not land fairies but land spirits, and felt goosebumps on her arms.
“Is it dangerous to talk to land spirits for a long time?”
Stella asked, swallowing dryly, both wanting and not wanting to hear the answer.

Wei Jing Mo: “…”
