Croft, summoned to the Emperor’s office after a long while, sat quietly on the sofa waiting, then was startled to discover candied peanuts on a plate atop the table.

“Huh? They’re here too?”

He knew candied peanuts were drawing great interest in the capital and its outskirts, but seeing them even on the Emperor’s table made him feel unusually proud.

He’d only lent a small hand during the harvest, yet he felt immensely satisfied.

So this is why people farm. Croft smiled contentedly at the peanuts as if admiring a well-grown child.

“Did you wait long?”

While lost in thought over the peanuts, the door opened and the Emperor strode briskly into the office. In just a few steps across the spacious room, the Emperor reached the table where Croft sat.

Since he’d arrived early and been waiting, Croft immediately stood up to greet the entering Emperor. Tall and handsome, the Emperor always seemed to brighten the room wherever he went.

Just a few years ago, he still carried traces of boyishness, but after enduring several wars, there was no hint left of that youthful lad.

“No, Your Majesty. I’ve only just arrived.”

“Sit there.”

At the Emperor’s command, Croft obediently sat back down. The sweet aroma of candied peanuts wafted gently from the table nearby.

“How are the princesses’ lessons going these days?”

“Yes, they’re all progressing well.”

It was their usual routine of formal, perfunctory questions and answers, so Croft replied as he always did—without hesitation or much thought.
