I Didn't Really Want to Do Farming! (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 78

Tap, tap, tap, tap.

The sound of peanuts being pulled from their roots echoed ceaselessly from all around. Stella, who had demonstrated the technique, and those who had only just learned of the existence of sugar peanuts today, were all intently harvesting the crop.

Though it required far more manual labor than other crops, there was something oddly enjoyable about it.

Piles of harvested peanuts steadily accumulated across the field. Earth sprites joyfully darted about, each carrying a single peanut in their tiny hands. To those unable to see the sprites, it might have appeared as though the peanuts were rolling about on the ground by themselves. Yet not a single person noticed the sprites scurrying everywhere, as everyone was utterly absorbed in gathering peanuts.

The sugar peanut harvest continued into the next day. Croft, who happened to be visiting Verdura Castle at the time, eagerly joined in with visible delight.

“Good heavens! I never imagined I’d get to do something like this myself!”

He’d never had the chance before, and even if he had wanted to, his family and friends would surely have protested, citing noble dignity and honor, preventing him from ever attempting it. Though Croft himself wouldn’t normally care about their objections, actually putting it into practice had always been hindered by numerous constraints.

But now, by sheer luck, he was experiencing farming right here at Verdura Castle.

Croft firmly believed that agriculture was the foundation of all human endeavors and thought the Empire’s citizens should be capable of feeding themselves. However, as the Empire grew larger and fewer people took up farming, cultivators had become exceedingly rare—especially in the capital region.

With just one more pair of hands, the work noticeably sped up. Though Croft was thin, his hands moved incredibly fast—so fast, in fact, that he harvested even quicker than Dudel, who was seasoned in farming. The remaining sugar peanuts were completely gathered well before lunchtime that day.

Croft gazed at the mountain of peanuts piled high before him, his expression filled with deep emotion.

If only he could, he’d have loved to take some peanuts home as a keepsake. But Croft couldn’t bring himself to ask; he merely clicked his tongue regretfully and stared longingly at the heap.

“This is your share, Teacher.”

Just then, Stella abruptly thrust a large sack toward Croft. Though the sack was tightly sealed, the sweet aroma still strongly wafted out.
