The princess didn’t need to know about feelings like the ones she herself was experiencing. It was unnecessary and troublesome to say such things.

When Mila pressed her lips into a tight line as if in regret, Stella smiled gently and crouched down before the fully grown spinach.

The more she looked at her, the more opposite she seemed to Ludina in personality, yet strangely, her heart kept being drawn to her. She suddenly wondered what would happen if the two ever met.

The more she thought of Ludina, the more desperately she wished to gather money quickly.

Mila watched Stella’s actions with a dazed, almost hypnotized gaze, as if utterly spellbound.

At some point, she began to feel that Princess Stella—kneeling in the dirt, smiling like a child before her plants—shone far more brightly than when adorned in dazzling gowns and glittering jewels. Yet this, too, must surely be a useless emotion.

Mila grew uneasy as her thoughts kept straying in directions of their own accord.

She mustn’t give her heart to someone she was meant to observe constantly and scrutinize for suspicious behavior.

She simply needed to stand one step away, remain as objective and calm as possible, and compile a detailed report.

Having steeled her resolve, Mila slowly inhaled and stepped back from Stella. Even if it seemed meaningless, there was nothing else to be done.

It was a phrase she’d heard so often from Head Maid Ann that her ears had nearly grown calluses. And of all people, Mila prided herself on being one who followed that rule best.

Yet lately, she’d been tearing up her reports more often. Unconsciously, she’d begun writing passages that sounded like excuses for Princess Stella’s behavior, and she’d been deleting or removing them from her reports more frequently.

This was especially true regarding Stella selling crops at the market.

Mila still hadn’t decided how far she should report that particular matter. Since tomorrow was the day she had to submit her report, her chest felt unusually tight.
