When Kai was young, Verdura Castle was a small, cozy place, yet incredibly beautiful. Designed personally by his father, the Emperor, for his mother who loved simplicity, it was also the place his mother cherished most.

But at some point, it ceased to be a place filled with warm, beautiful, and joyful memories—it had instead become gloomy, sorrowful, and something he wished to avoid.

Why?

Though the emotional gap regarding the same place was vast, the memories that might have bridged the two feelings were utterly hollow, as if a gaping hole had been torn right through them.

It felt as though the only bridge connecting the two sides had been severed. Kai’s mind grew tangled as a sudden recollection of Verdura Castle surfaced—now tainted solely by unpleasant feelings.

Why had the memories from that middle period vanished? And why had a place once imbued with cherished moments with his mother been left to decay like this?

“What’s going on?”

Kai tried hard to focus on his hazy memories, but the more he strained, the more they faded like mist. As he concentrated on the blurring recollections, a headache began anew.

Kai frowned and let out a short groan.

“What’s wrong? Are you in pain? Or did you maybe skip dinner?”

Esta asked, watching over Kai as if she were his older sister. Kai suddenly wondered why this earth spirit had appeared at such an hour.

“Why does she keep coming here?”

A suspicion abruptly rose—perhaps Princess Stella had some ulterior motive, and since she could command earth spirits, maybe she was using them to spy on him.

“Well, it’s because you’re one of the few human friends Stella has.”

Last time, the little creature had claimed it was out of pity; now it called him that woman’s friend. Kai tried to recall any real connection between Stella and himself that could justify the term “friend,” but nothing came to mind.
