The table was abundantly rich for commoners, yet pitifully meager for royalty. Dudel worried anxiously that someone might be harshly reprimanded for preparing such a meal. But,

“Wow! Rian, did you really make bread with carrots? I can smell the carrot in the bread!”

Princess Stella didn’t show the slightest anger; instead, she sat down at the table beaming with cheerful anticipation.

Holding the slightly reddish bread close to her nose, sniffing it happily, she looked as bright and carefree as an ordinary girl.

The others, clearly accustomed to this behavior, smiled warmly as they moved sauces and soups closer to where the princess sat. Their smiles were not those of servants attending a difficult master, but of family offering gentle, heartfelt care.

“You two worked hard too. I know it must’ve been overwhelming on your first day, but you did wonderfully.”

Stella’s gaze, which had been smiling at her attendants, shifted to Dudel and his companion, who were staring at her in stunned silence.

“No, not at all. I never even dreamed in my wildest imagination that we’d all be sharing a meal together like this.”

When she’d first seen the barren, desolate garden, she’d honestly felt utterly lost. Yet, realizing this also meant more opportunities to prove her abilities, her heart had begun to race with excitement.

Her initial resolve—to perform so brilliantly they’d have no choice but to keep renewing her contract—had scattered like dust not long after she’d begun working.

Not only had all the servants of Verdura Castle pitched in together to help, but the princess herself had even taken up a hoe and joined them in the fields.

Dudel had braced himself to work under the sharp, discerning eyes of observers, only to realize his assumption was completely wrong when everyone was so absorbed in their own tasks they paid him no mind at all.

What these people needed wasn’t just another laborer, but a true companion to cultivate the land alongside them. From his very first day working in Verdura, Dudel had grown fond of this place.

Certainly not because of the bread, however delicious it was—though it did make his eyes widen in delight.
