The earth sprites had loudly boasted they wouldn’t leave my side for even a moment, yet they hadn’t shown their faces all day.

Stella, who had been worried they might constantly pop up and bother her, now found herself secretly missing them when they didn’t appear.

After much trial and error, I finally completed four handkerchiefs representing the four seasons and one additional handkerchief embroidered with a carrot to commemorate my first carrot harvest. I felt quite proud of myself upon finishing them.

I’d been thinking of giving them to the earth sprites when they came, but they hadn’t shown up all morning. Wondering if they might be sleeping, I checked under the bed again, but the gemstone-box bed was completely empty.

Though I’d brushed off all the dirt and it was clean again, I had an uneasy feeling that brushing dirt off every day might become my new routine.

“Stella, what are you doing there?”

As I peered under the bed, a cute and familiar voice called out. The earth sprites had returned.

“Where have you been? You promised you’d guard me all day!”

“Oh, I meant to, but that scary woman was with you, so I figured you’d be safe.”

Ark gave an inexplicable reply to Stella’s exaggerated complaint.

“Scary woman? You don’t mean Mila, do you?”

“Yeah. The woman who never smiles and always looks so stern. Mila.”

It was funny how just her expression alone made Mila seem frightening.

“If she’s so scary, why leave me alone with her?”

“Well, even if she’s scary, she likes you.”
