Ludina seemed to share the same feelings, for instead of rejoicing at the mountain of gifts piling up, she nervously chewed her lower lip, unsure what to do.

“Dresses and jewels. His Majesty instructed you to choose whichever pleases you most and wear it to tonight’s formal banquet.”

“A formal banquet?”

Stella asked in disbelief. Lefford, who had been listening with a furrowed brow, replied in an irritated tone.

“Yes. It begins at five. Please be punctual.”

After confirming that the servant had carried in the last gift box, Lefford gave a single curt nod by way of farewell and disappeared.

It felt as though a storm had swept through and left. Once the bustling crowd had departed, only the vibrantly colored gift boxes towered like a pagoda in the dimly lit room.

“Princess, what could all this mean? Could it be that His Majesty has finally remembered your birthday?”

Ludina’s previously gloomy expression brightened as she spoke. Her naturally optimistic mindset had already begun interpreting the situation in the best possible light.

“No way.”

Stella thought it impossible. Just days ago, when they’d met in the garden, King Philip had looked right through her as if gazing at distant mountains.

Yet, deep in her chest, a faint wisp of hope began to shimmer like a mirage.

“Princess, open them quickly!”

Ludina’s voice rang out with excitement, as if she herself had received the gifts.

“Is it really alright?”

A tiny hope bubbled up—that perhaps this was compensation for all the days she’d endured in silence.

“Of course! Open them right now!”

Seeing Stella hesitate before the boxes, Ludina urged her on, even stamping her feet in eagerness. Stella gave a faint, wry smile at Ludina’s animated display.

Inside the boxes were treasures so exquisite they left one wide-eyed.

There were five gowns alone—one adorned with pearly white beads paired with a matching necklace, another evoking crimson roses accompanied by a ruby set—as well as an ostrich-feather fan, a wide-brimmed hat currently fashionable among noble young ladies, pointed-toe shoes, and even a silk petticoat.

Staring at the dazzling array of gifts, Stella asked in a voice heavy with worry,

“Could these truly be meant for me?”

“Lord Lefford himself brought them directly to this room, so they must be yours, Princess.”

Ludina spoke cheerfully in her brightest tone to reassure the anxious Stella, though she herself was just as uneasy.

Between them lay treasures they’d never touched before in their lives, yet both could only manage awkward smiles.

[This is the timeline separator]

Tension was plainly visible on Stella’s face as she stood before the entrance to the Diamond Hall. It was her first invitation to a formal banquet.

Even wearing the dress she liked best among those gifted, she couldn’t help but shrink inwardly. Though she felt insignificant before the grand doors, Stella steeled her trembling heart and straightened her shoulders.

“No matter what anyone says, you’re a princess! And a truly beautiful one at that!”

Those were Ludina’s solemn words as she’d sent Stella off to the banquet. Recalling Ludina’s determined expression—even clenching her fists and urging her on—made Stella’s lips curl into a faint, wry smile.

She’d never realized how much strength it gave her to know someone was on her side.

As the doors opened, a vast and brilliantly lit hall unfolded before Stella. Simultaneously, the gentle murmur of conversation and laughter abruptly ceased.

For a moment, she wondered if she should turn back. Caught awkwardly in the sudden silence, Stella locked eyes with King Philip, who was seated at the table.

Instinctively about to bow her head, Stella froze instead upon seeing the king gazing at her with a kind smile.

Is he really smiling at me?

She turned around to check if someone else stood behind her—but there was no one.

Her heart pounded wildly.

King Philip wasn’t the only one smiling at her.

Even Queen Eliza and Princess Beatrice, who usually either glared at her fiercely or treated her as if she didn’t exist, now offered her gentle smiles. Princess Beatrice even gave her a small wave.

Could this be a dream?

Stella walked toward the dining table in a daze.

This was a scene she’d imagined countless times—on lonely birthdays or while listening alone to distant music drifting through the halls.

A fantasy where everyone welcomed her, cherished her, waited for her, and longed to share a meal with her as someone truly precious.

The closer she drew to the table, the harder her heart hammered. Though her new shoes pinched her feet, her heart felt so light it was as if she were walking on clouds.

“Come in, my dear.”

King Philip was the first to speak to Stella. His tone was warm and affectionate, not critical or dismissive. Though she should have been grateful, something about it felt strangely off-putting.

“Do come in—we’ve been waiting for you.”

“Sister, please sit down.”

With Queen Eliza and Princess Beatrice beaming warmly at her, Stella stood dumbfounded for a moment before belatedly offering a proper bow.

“I greet the Sun of Amalune.”

At Stella’s deeply respectful greeting, Philip chuckled amiably and waved his hand dismissively.

“No need for such formality with your father. You must be hungry—please sit.”

His tone was tender, as if addressing a beloved youngest daughter. The queen and Princess Beatrice nodded in agreement, pointing to an empty chair.

The sudden invitation, unexpected kindness, and abrupt familiarity all felt as uncomfortable as wearing someone else’s stolen clothes.

Yet, part of her was also quietly happy—it felt as if she were finally being accepted as family.

The tablecloth, made of fine linen, gleamed under the weight of polished silverware.

A grand centerpiece dominated the enormous table, beautifully adorned with lilies—the national flower of Amalune—and an assortment of fruits.

Well-polished silver candelabras shone like mirrors, and lavish table decorations taller than a person hinted this was far more than an ordinary meal.

Being her first formal banquet, Stella’s nerves had stiffened every muscle in her body.

Yet the food was incredibly delicious. The steak was so tender it melted in her mouth like butter after just a few chews, the soup was richly savory and smooth, and not a single dish was anything less than exquisite.

Amidst the unprecedented kindness and consideration, Stella finished her meal in a dreamlike state of happiness.

The dinner, which concluded only after dessert, finally ended past nine in the evening.

“Did you enjoy your meal?”

The gentle voice belonged to Queen Eliza. Though her soft tone had initially felt awkward, after hearing it all evening, it now seemed somewhat familiar.

“Yes, Your Majesty.”

Stella’s cheeks flushed as red as ripe plums as she replied.

“No need for ‘Your Majesty.’ Just call me Mother.”

“…Yes?”

“All this time, you must have felt so hurt. I was foolishly narrow-minded. What fault was it of yours? Will you forgive me for acting so pettily?”

“Sister, I’m truly sorry too. After all, you and I are the only sisters who share the same blood.”

Too stunned to speak, Stella could only stare. Eliza nodded understandingly, then turned toward the king seated at the head of the table.

“Your Majesty, please give Stella what you’ve prepared. She more than deserves it.”

“Do you think so?”

“Stella, your father has prepared a birthday gift for you.”

Stella struggled to comprehend their exchange—it was impossible. She’d already received more gifts than she could count. Too much of anything was never a good thing.

“The gifts I’ve already received are more than enough.”

“No. This is something I should have given you long ago. I’m sorry it’s come so late.”

No sooner had the king finished speaking than the steward standing beside him approached Stella and handed her a scroll.

Wrapped in violet silk and tied with golden thread, the scroll clearly wasn’t ordinary at first glance.

Stella took it almost absentmindedly, glanced around, then slowly unrolled it. The unusually cold texture of the parchment against her palm made the hairs on her neck stand on end.

As she untied the golden thread and unfurled the scroll, a heavy silence filled the room. Feeling every eye fixed upon her, Stella spread the document open.

“Your Majesty, this is…”

She tried to speak calmly, but her voice trembled involuntarily. Seeing this, the king and queen exchanged pleased smiles.

“It’s your certificate of lineage—a proclamation to the world that you are my daughter. I’m sorry it’s come so late.”

At King Philip’s kindly spoken words, Stella’s vision blurred.

Drip… drip…

Tears began streaming down Stella’s cheeks as she clutched the scroll tightly, unable to utter a word.

“Father, look—Sister’s crying. She must have been so heartbroken all this time.”

Stella hadn’t even realized she was crying until Beatrice’s words made her hastily wipe her tears with the back of her hand. Though a handkerchief was available, she wasn’t composed enough to use it properly.

Beatrice, seated across from her, rose smoothly and approached Stella. She gave her a light embrace, then held something out. A fresh violet scent, like that of spring, emanated from Beatrice.

“Sister, sign with this. Then we’ll truly be family.”

What Beatrice offered was a golden fountain pen.

Stella took the pen from Beatrice, who smiled brightly at her. She tried hard not to tense up, but her fingertips trembled uncontrollably. Beatrice gently enclosed Stella’s hand within both of hers.

“Sign it. And let’s remember this day forever.”

Beatrice smiled tenderly, her lips curving upward in a lovely smile Stella had never seen her wear before.

No.

A voice sounded nearby. But Stella, gripping the pen tightly, began signing slowly.

Beatrice, watching the tip of Stella’s pen, bit her lip to suppress a laugh bubbling up inside. She desperately wanted to hurl insults—call her the most foolish human alive—but held back.

There would be plenty of time later to mock Stella for showing up here without knowing her place.

Scratch… scratch…
