Not long after returning to Verdura Castle, Mila learned what had happened at Muge Castle.

It was because Beth, unable to keep it to herself, came running over and spilled every last detail of what had occurred at the tea party.

“Princess Stella was treated like yesterday’s cold rice back in her homeland? How could that be, when she’s the eldest daughter? And apparently, the reason it took her a whole month to arrive in Credion Empire was because the king refused to provide a proper ship and instead sent her off on a merchant vessel. Even worse, the merchants on that ship were former pirates! What if something awful had happened to the princess aboard that ship? Oh! Could it be that it already…?”

Mila’s patience finally snapped at Beth’s impudent speculation.

“Beth. That’s enough.”

At Mila’s words, spoken as if chewing each syllable, Beth instantly clamped her mouth shut in surprise. Having known Mila for a long time, Beth recognized that this tone meant Mila was truly furious.

Mila rarely lost her temper, but when she did, there was something unnervingly intimidating about her—something that made others tense up.

“She’s the one I serve. You haven’t forgotten that, have you?”

“Ah, sorry.”

Beth squeezed her eyes shut and bowed her head deeply as she apologized. Though Mila knew Beth’s apology was sincere—Beth’s simple nature meant she never apologized insincerely—Mila still couldn’t shake off her anger.

She didn’t care how the foreign princess had been treated or raised in her homeland. However poorly she’d been treated, it surely couldn’t have been worse than her own past.

It was none of her concern how treacherous the princess’s journey here had been, or whether she’d been cast away like trash.

Yet, for some inexplicable reason, Mila felt uneasy—and angry. If she’d known it would turn out like this, she wouldn’t have accepted that pearl brooch.

“Don’t go spreading rumors like that elsewhere. You could get yourself into serious trouble.”

She genuinely worried about Beth. There were spiteful maids who occasionally took advantage of Beth’s light-hearted nature, cleverly using her to maliciously spread and exaggerate gossip.
