That night.

Esta, who had been sleeping as usual on her plush doll bed, suddenly snapped her eyes open. As if doused with cold water, she bolted upright, scanned her surroundings, and quickly hopped down from the bed.

Outside the dollhouse, Esta met Oton and Ark, who had also just woken up—just like her.

“You felt it too?”

“Shh! Don’t tell Stella.”

“Let’s check first.”

The three, who had seemingly woken up simultaneously as if by prior agreement, dashed swiftly toward the window. Their tiny size meant their footsteps made almost no sound as they ran.

Reaching the window in no time, they narrowed their eyes and stared intently into the pitch-black darkness outside.

“There it is.”

Oton murmured softly, her gaze fixed on the inky blackness beyond the window. Standing gathered outside the castle gate were unmistakably earth ghouls. Though it was too dark to see clearly, there appeared to be at least twenty of them.

They loitered outside the gate as if waiting for something. Their synchronized movements in the same direction resembled reeds swaying all at once in the wind.

After a brief moment, as if suddenly sensing the gazes upon them, the earth ghouls abruptly froze in place and simultaneously opened their mouths wide.

“Cover Stella’s ears!”

At Oton’s shout, Ark leaped down from the windowsill. Forgetting entirely his usual fear of heights, Ark instantly jumped down and pulled two clumps of dirt from his pocket.

Right after, Esta leaped down from the sill as well, took one dirt clump from Ark, and stuffed it into Stella’s left ear. Ark blocked the right ear almost at the same instant.
