As Kai had anticipated, Melissa appeared toward the end of the banquet. She even lied brazenly, claiming she’d been invited, but he wasn’t angry.

This wasn’t the first time Melissa had acted this way, and occasionally her willful behavior proved quite helpful—today being a perfect example.

“How do I look in this dress?”

Melissa asked, resting her elbows on the table and propping her chin in her hands. Each time she moved, her violet dress shimmered faintly.

The fabric itself was woven with diamond dust, creating the illusion that the wearer had transformed into a living jewel.

Melissa’s lovely face, as she gazed at Kai, was brimming with mischief. Her cleavage was boldly exposed through the deep V-shaped neckline.

Kai’s eyes briefly lingered on the small star-shaped mole on her right breast before quickly looking away. It was her favorite feature—remarkably pretty for just a mole.

At that fleeting glance, the corners of Melissa’s lips curled up in satisfaction.

“It suits you.”

Kai replied flatly and reached for the wine bottle. A servant standing nearby hurried forward, but Kai raised his hand to stop him.

The servant respectfully clasped his hands and stepped back. Kai, seemingly annoyed, lifted the bottle to his lips and took a swig instead of pouring into his empty glass.

Melissa watched silently, then took the bottle Kai had set down and gulped down the remaining wine. Her lips, stained by the wine, turned an even deeper red.

She licked the lingering drops from her lips as if savoring a sweet drink. Though unintentional, the gesture was incredibly alluring.

“Really suits me?”

“Yeah.”

Melissa knew full well that after today, Kai wouldn’t even remember the color of her dress.

But even a flat, utterly insincere response was fine—after all, she was the only woman in the empire who could receive even this much attention from him.

Though she knew over a hundred beautiful women longed desperately for just a single glance from him, Kai paid them no mind.

Yet Melissa still resorted to such childish interruptions, driven by her competitive spirit.

The disappointment and poorly concealed inferiority she saw on the princesses’ faces whenever she appeared at banquets—she enjoyed witnessing it, even without looking directly.

She repeated this tiresome ritual each time because the pleasure it brought far outweighed the effort. Today, she’d deliberately kept her attire simple and wore almost no makeup.

She didn’t need such things to effortlessly outshine insignificant princesses from minor nations. Call it useless vanity if you will—but reveling in her strength and superiority always sent a thrilling shiver through her.

Kai never stopped her either. He found it amusing to watch, and it also served to prune those who overreached their station.

Kai, expecting her to drink more, no longer glanced at the wine bottle. Melissa felt slightly bored.

Then she’d just have to create some entertainment.

“They won’t leave you alone this year either if you let it pass like this.”

Melissa fiddled with the nearly empty wine bottle, deliberately provoking Kai. Marriage talk was one of the things he disliked most.

Her violet eyes sparkled with anticipation, waiting for his rebuttal.

But Kai merely closed his eyes wearily.

“It’s bearable.”

Melissa’s spirits sank slightly at Kai’s dull response.

“Then I’m glad.”

Melissa tried to pour more wine, realized the bottle was empty, and stood up. It seemed today’s amusement had come to an end—but she needed one last confirmation.

“What about this year’s princesses? Anyone catch your eye? They all seemed quite pretty.”

“If you’re done drinking, go. I’m tired.”

Though his words meant “stop wasting my time and leave,” Melissa was perfectly satisfied with the reply.

The servants listening to their unguarded exchange couldn’t help but smile.

The empire’s strongest man and most beautiful woman together always looked like a painting. Many in the palace hoped the two would marry before the year ended.

“If you really can’t stand it, send word. I’ll rescue you.”

At Melissa’s playful remark, Kai opened his eyes and gave a slight nod.

“But what’s this?”

Melissa, about to leave, stopped mid-step and asked. Occasionally, if she liked a gift brought by a princess, she’d pester Kai to let her have it.

Kai had never refused her. None of the tribute gifts from various nations held any real value to him anyway.

Thus, no one minded if Melissa took a few worthless trinkets—they owed her their emperor’s life, after all, and she was a war hero of the Credion Empire.

Assuming she’d found something else she wanted, Kai stood up nonchalantly.

“Could they really have sent this as a gift? While offering their daughter as a hostage?”

Melissa stared incredulously at the golden tea set.

“She must be thoroughly out of her father’s favor.”

If the bloodline certificate had been forged, the accompanying gift wouldn’t have remained here. Thus, the princess who brought this gift was indeed of royal blood—but clearly abandoned by her homeland.

Kai stared blankly at the teapot gleaming under the light, then recalled the woman who’d shown no surprise upon learning her gift was deemed worthless.

Her eyes, an intriguing blend of brown and green, held emotions he’d never seen in other princesses.

When she stepped forward holding the bloodline certificate, Kai was certain it was fake.

After all, her large eyes were filled with unmistakable fear. Yet the certificate was genuine—and the king’s gift was pitifully meager.

He’d expected her to blush in shame or be wounded by the surrounding scornful glances. But once again, his prediction was proven wrong.

She’d smiled. Though only for a brief moment, she’d given a bitter, resigned smile at the king’s gift—sent in place of her life—before returning to her seat.

Her unsteady steps seemed slightly unbalanced, yet her straight-backed figure radiated stubborn pride.

“I’ll take this.”

Kai, lost in thought, snapped back to attention at Melissa’s sudden declaration. It had been a long time since he’d spent so long thinking about someone.

He looked dryly at the teapot she pointed to. Under the light, the round teapot sparkled brightly.

Just as Melissa reached for it—

“Not that one.”

“Huh?”

Melissa’s eyes widened in surprise. Kai had never denied her anything she’d claimed before.

Sometimes she even used gift selections as a gauge to measure how precious she was to him.

Even when she took something outrageously expensive or a one-of-a-kind treasure, Kai would merely nod indifferently.

Yet this was just a plain golden teapot studded with a few gems—something she could easily buy thousands of with her own money.

Was he really refusing her? Melissa thought she must have misheard.

“Take something else instead.”

But Kai repeated himself clearly, proving he hadn’t misspoken.

“Why?”

Melissa’s brow furrowed slightly. She stared intently at Kai, but he kept his gaze fixed on the ordinary-looking teapot. Suddenly, she felt an urge to kick the teapot away in frustration.

“It’s something I don’t have.”

With that, Kai left the Golden Hall. Left alone, Melissa glared at the teapot for a long while before storming out, snatching up the nearest object in irritation.

“Shall I escort you to your office?”

Harmann approached quietly the moment Kai stepped outside.

Kai was about to agree but shook his head instead and stood up abruptly. It was mere whim—today, for some reason, the noise of chattering voices felt especially grating.

“No. I need to rest.”

Harmann beamed as if hearing wonderful news and lavished him with unexpected praise, repeating several times how wise the decision was.

“Didn’t expect to be praised for skipping work.”

“Everything in excess is harmful, Your Majesty.”

“You used to nag me for not working enough.”

“That was because you weren’t working at all.”

Harmann clicked his tongue like a father scolding a willful child.

“I ought to rip out that insolent tongue of yours.”

Kai grumbled, and Harmann pursed his lips, miming smoothing out a crumpled tablecloth.

“You’ve gotten quite skilled at feigning innocence.”

“I heard this fabric doesn’t wrinkle easily—but apparently, I was mistaken.”

“And you’ve learned to deflect beautifully.”

“I can’t possibly turn the Emperor himself.”

“Father should’ve known Harmann Teizeze was this outrageously insolent.”

“He called it my charm, Your Majesty.”

“You never lose an argument.”

Instead of replying, Harmann gave a slight shrug of his narrow shoulders. Kai shook his head and strode out of the central hall.

For the first time in a while, a relaxed smile graced his lips—because only when speaking with Harmann could he breathe freely in a palace where everyone else groveled before him.

Male lead fell into her trap — and shattered when she walked away

This is also on my reread list!

This one is a slow burn, but when it burns, it burns hard.

Definitely worth a read, y’all!

The story follows a thousand-year-old seductive spirit who, on a bet, sets out to charm the male lead—a once-promising but unfortunate cultivator.

But just when she succeeds in making him fall for her, she heartlessly leaves, driving him to madness.

Determined to find her at all costs, he captures her, keeping her by his side no matter what, even if she hates him.

I love this kind of trope—I enjoy watching the male lead suffer in agony.

The ending drags a bit with unnecessary filler, but that’s fine.

As long as I enjoy the beginning, I’m good.
