I Didn't Really Want to Do Farming! (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 1
Stella…..
The voice that reached her ears like a whisper was both unfamiliar and familiar. Stella pulled the blanket over her head as if she hadn’t heard a thing.
Tap! Tap-tap!
The sound tapping against the window was extremely faint.
On a windy day like this, it was an utterly ordinary noise—just like a stray leaf brushing against the glass. Yet Stella deliberately turned her body away from the direction of the sound.
Tap-tap! Tap!
The sound persisted.
Outside the curtained window stood a being who, as always, stubbornly called out Stella’s name, hoping she would finally look at them.
Dark, round eyes quietly stared at Stella, hidden beneath her blanket.
Though Stella refused to look, she could still sense their presence—and as time passed, their numbers grew, one by one, as if in protest against her refusal to acknowledge them.
Stella.
Stella.
Stella…..
The voice started as one, then became two, then suddenly multiplied into dozens, echoing chaotically inside her ears like a disorienting chorus.
Go away.
Her hands clenched tightly around the blanket. But Stella’s voice remained trapped in her throat, unable to escape as sound.
On her tenth birthday—a day utterly devoid of anyone to offer congratulations—the sudden voice had completely changed Stella’s life.
“Who are you?”
“Who are you?”
“Why are you repeating what I say?”
“Why are you… repeating what I say?”
At sunset, a being quietly appeared outside the window, mimicking Stella’s words exactly like a child learning a foreign language, grinning widely.
It was far too small to be human, yet far too human-like to be a beast. Though its mouth was unnaturally wide, the way it smiled joyfully while imitating speech even seemed cute.
No taller than a handspan, with stubby limbs, a round face, and eyes as black as wild grapes, they never once revealed their name. They either merely echoed Stella’s words or stayed silent, listening.
Although proper conversation was impossible, just having someone who met her eyes and smiled at her made Stella incredibly happy. She finally had a friend.
“Mother, look at this! I’ve made a friend!”
Stella carefully placed one of them on her palms like a precious treasure and hurried to her mother’s room.
As she opened the door, a foul stench of perfume, alcohol, and vomit assaulted her nose. The bright smile that had lit Stella’s face as she opened the door quickly vanished.
Instead, worry, anger, exhaustion, sorrow, and despair tangled together like the room’s rancid odor, hardening the line of her lips.
Stella concealed her overwhelming sadness and fear beneath an awkward smile and slowly walked toward the bed.
The bed looked as if a battle had just been fought upon it.
Her mother lay diagonally across the large bed, her fine golden hair cascading like a waterfall over the edge. Her hand still clutched a liquor bottle, carelessly sprawled across the sheets, and the spilled alcohol had soaked the white blanket and silk nightgown.
Half-eaten fruit, vomit spilled beneath the table, shattered glassware, and her mother, fast asleep in drunken oblivion.
She slept peacefully, as if utterly indifferent to the chaos surrounding her.
“Mother.”
“Mmmmmgh.”
When Stella called out cautiously, her mother’s prone body writhed like a snake. Stella glanced around for others, but the spacious room held only the two of them—her and her sleeping mother.
She almost turned away to avoid waking her mother again, but sighed and walked back toward the bed. The closer she got, the stronger the mingled scents of alcohol and perfume became. Yet Stella never once wrinkled her nose.
Though her mother often lashed out, cried, or even struck her when drunk, on her sober days she would brush Stella’s hair, smile into her eyes, and sometimes even hold her.
Stella placed her tiny friend gently on the table, then carefully pried the liquor bottle from her mother’s grasp. She fetched a dry towel and pressed it firmly onto the damp blanket. Her little friend sat silently on the table, watching Stella’s every move.
“Mmmmmgh.”
When the tiny friend mimicked her mother’s groan, Stella put a finger to her lips and whispered, “Shh!”—and the creature instantly copied her, pressing its short finger to its own lips. Each time it imitated Stella, its horizontally slit mouth stretched into a wide, grinning curve.
Just then—
“What are you doing here?”
Her mother’s hoarse voice came from behind. Startled, Stella turned toward the bed.
Even with her face twisted in pain from a hangover, her mother remained breathtakingly beautiful. Eagerly, Stella scooped up her tiny friend from the table and proudly held it out before her mother.
“What’s this?”
Her mother frowned deeply as she looked down at Stella’s hands.
“My new friend. I asked for its name, but it wouldn’t tell me, so I’m thinking of giving it one.”
Stella waited proudly for her mother’s reaction. Her mother had always scolded her for being alone, so surely she’d praise her now for making a friend. Stella hoped her mother would love this friend as much as she did. But—

“So you’re mocking me too, now.”
Her mother’s reply was nothing like what Stella had hoped for.
Before Stella could find words to respond, her mother abruptly sat up. Still unsteady from the alcohol, she swept her disheveled hair aside and roughly shoved Stella’s shoulders.
“Aah!”
Stella crashed to the floor with a thud. Even in her fall, she clutched her tiny friend tightly to her chest. Fearing her mother would grow even angrier if she didn’t rise quickly, she scrambled back to her feet immediately.
When her mother’s hazel eyes—so like her own—loomed close, Stella instinctively stepped back.
“Say that again. What did you say you have?”
The lingering scent of alcohol on her mother’s breath stung Stella’s nose.
“A… a friend….”
Her mother’s gaze dropped to Stella’s chest. Stella held out her tiny friend once more.
“This one… I don’t… know its name.”
Her voice, barely squeezed out, trembled thinly with tension. After staring blankly at Stella’s hands for a moment, her mother gave a derisive snort and slapped her cheek mercilessly.
Slap!
The brutal strike whipped Stella’s small head sideways without mercy.
As her vision darkened and then slowly cleared, her mother’s furious face came into view.
“There’s nothing there! Just because I’m drunk doesn’t mean you can ignore me too! After everything I’ve done for you! Do you even realize what I’ve had to endure because of you!”
Her voice grew louder and more ragged with every word, her anger escalating.
“No, it’s really here! Look!”
Though her cheek burned red, Stella felt no pain—only heartbreak that her mother misunderstood her.
No, I’m not ignoring you. My friend is really here.
“But it’s really here….”
Yet the more Stella insisted, the angrier her mother became, until she even began striking the maids who had rushed in belatedly.
“You… can’t see it?”
No one who entered the room could see the being resting in Stella’s palm. Stella’s gaze slowly shifted from her mother and the maids to her tiny friend.
“You can’t see it?”
The little creature repeated Stella’s words exactly, stretching its lips wide. Its round, button-like eyes gleamed jet-black like onyx.
“Huh!”
Stella jolted awake with a gasp, her whole body drenched in cold sweat. She pulled the blanket up to her chin, but the chill wouldn’t leave—her body trembled uncontrollably.
Perhaps because of the dream she hadn’t had in so long, it felt as if icy air pierced straight through her bones.
It was the same dream she always had around this time of year. After realizing no one else could see the tiny beings, Stella had learned to act as if she couldn’t see them either.
Even to her young mind, seeing something no one else could was clearly not normal. And whenever her mother caught her speaking to them, she would wail as if the world had ended, convinced her only daughter had gone mad.
Though her mother was more often cruel than kind, Stella hated seeing her cry because of her.
So she pretended not to hear them jumping in front of her or calling her name—“Stella, Stella”—and after several months of this, the tiny beings gradually vanished from her sight.
But every time the season returned when she’d first met them, Stella would dream of that day once again.
Still half-asleep, she felt as if someone was calling her name from somewhere nearby.
A month ago, after her mother—who had been bedridden from drinking—passed away, Stella moved into the castle to live alone. Though a week had passed since the move, the room still felt foreign, even the air unfamiliar.
Knock knock!
Staring blankly out the window, Stella jerked her head around in surprise at the sudden knock—just as startled as when she’d awakened from her dream.
When male lead is the homewrecker
“I know she doesn’t love him.”
I’ve read the novel below twice already. Girls, I’m highly recommending it to you!

The female lead? Not a good person.
The second male lead? Not a good person.
The male lead? Willingly plays the third party, breaking up the female and second male lead’s relationship despite all the warnings from his friends—so yeah, he’s definitely not a good person either.
Basically, nobody in this novel is simple-minded or without scheming.
The female lead starts off as the male lead’s secretary, but don’t worry—later on, she takes over the company while the male lead steps back to support her. He won’t steal her spotlight, overshadow her, or dull her shine.
I love novels where men are out here snatching wigs, tearing each other down, and going to war just to win the female lead’s affection. And this is exactly that kind of novel. Most of Hai Dai Ran’s works have this dynamic. You’ll see the male characters’ emotions being pushed to the absolute extreme.
There’s even a scene where the second male lead exposes the male lead online for being a homewrecker. The brotherhood immediately gangs up on him, dragging him through the mud. I find it compelling —it completely flips reality on its head, where usually, women are the ones fighting over a man and getting torn apart by the sisterhood.
For me, female leads in the novels I read should only struggle in their careers, not in love. But if the brainless romantics in the story are all men? I have zero complaints.
I’ve pretty much read all of Hai Dai Ran’s novels and even translated all of them—her works are just my thing. I’ll slowly upload everything here. One day, when my website is official, I hope I can invite her to join as one of the star authors.
Here’s the story synopsis:
