Though it was time to have an audience with the Emperor, he still hadn’t appeared.

Having finished dressing alone, I hurriedly slipped out of the palace. Strangely, the palace courtyard was deserted.

Neither Blanchiche’s knights who had accompanied us, nor Hertian, nor even Osen—who was supposed to have arrived at dawn—were anywhere in sight. A creeping sense of unease rose from my feet, as if I’d been abandoned alone in the middle of a forest.

‘Hertian wouldn’t be so easily taken down.’

He had lived under the shadow of death since birth. He wasn’t someone who’d fall to something as trivial as the Empress’s schemes.
