Barefoot, the woman pressed firmly against the floor as she walked across it. Whenever she sensed something unusual, she examined the spot carefully.
Having swept the entire floor barefoot, her feet had blistered. Heat radiated from her reddened soles. She hadn’t even inspected half the floor yet, yet she was already reaching her limit.
Since today was only a preliminary search, it was sufficient to examine the remaining half another time. Natasha resolved instead to thoroughly investigate every area except the floor.
To mark the places she had already checked, she lightly scratched the wallpaper with a needle—so faintly that even maids doing their cleaning would never notice.
Having finished her examination of the floor earlier than expected, Natasha headed next toward the Emperor’s study.
