He declared it was too dangerous to return to the ducal mansion in the midst of this blizzard and promised to send a carriage once the weather calmed down.

Zieghart, walking away, felt unusually significant to her—different from his usual self.

The departing man strangely stirred a sense of regret within her. It was Zieghart who had rushed in because of the cold, yet it was the ring resting on her slender ring finger that now exuded a chill.

Thus, Natasha found herself staring out the window for a long while—until the man’s silhouette shrank into a dot, and until that dot vanished into thin air, leaving her standing there, dazed, fixated only on the window.

‘I…’

And then, belatedly, she realized.

‘I’ve fallen in love with him…’

Her heart was pounding rapidly.

Later, Natasha confessed her marriage plans to Sir Dante. Two days afterward, the moment the blizzard ceased, he came rushing over in a fluster and demanded,

“Marriage, Your Highness? What on earth are you talking about all of a sudden!”

Her—getting married? Sir Dante cried out in disbelief. Who was the man? Had she been threatened? Was he truly trustworthy?

Natasha hadn’t even opened her mouth, yet Sir Dante rambled on alone, eventually tearing at his hair in despair as if a sudden realization had struck him.

“Could it be… the Duke of Aschardt?”

After all, there was only one man worthy of her hand in marriage.

Faced with his tone of certainty, Natasha didn’t make excuses—she simply nodded.

Good heavens! Sir Dante let out a deep sigh, his face stunned with shock.

“Your Highness, even if he bears no direct guilt, he was closely tied to the imperial court. Are you truly certain about this?”

“Yes. I’m fine.”

She nodded again firmly.

Sir Dante didn’t know the details, but Natasha had received tremendous help from the man—beyond just financial support. He had restored joy and vitality to her during her hardest times.

The moment he silently held her hand when she was sick with fever.

The moment he heroically appeared during her quarrel with the villagers.

The moment he readily offered chrysanthemums and scented candles when she sorrowed over having no grave to commemorate her parents’ death.

And even the moment he handed her the ring.

Every single moment had become a warm memory for Natasha.

Building a happy home with the one she loved.

After tragedy had once forced her to abandon that dream, she now felt that with him, she might fulfill it after all.

Natasha Charlier wanted to be happy with Zieghart Aschardt.

Confronted with the princess’s unwavering resolve, Sir Dante finally surrendered.

Over the past six months, Sir Dante himself had been carefully observing Zieghart. Though the Duke of Aschardt wasn’t someone one could call kind, even insincerely, Sir Dante was certain he would make Natasha happy—and he believed the man’s feelings were genuine.

“…Very well. Since he has safely guarded Your Highness for half a year, I won’t oppose you any longer. With him, you’ll be protected from both the imperial court and the duchy.”

“Yes, and I’ve even received permission for you, Sir Dante, to come with me to the ducal mansion. Please don’t worry too much. By now, even you know he means me no harm.”

At Natasha’s bright smile, Sir Dante couldn’t help but smile foolishly in return.

“Your Highness, you must be happy.”

“Yes.”

“You must live the most beautiful life possible—never regretting your choice.”

“Of course.”

She boldly promised without a trace of fear, unaware that such confidence was in fact reckless arrogance.

Two days later, Zieghart appeared, driving the ducal carriage himself.

During the carriage journey with Natasha and Zieghart, Sir Dante asked all the questions he’d been holding back. Though phrased politely, his inquiries were layered with doubt and suspicion.

Yet Zieghart answered each one gently without so much as a change in expression, gradually dissolving Sir Dante’s distrust. His kindness was too consistent to be false, his answers too meticulous to be lies.

Upon arriving at the ducal mansion, the two were separated—contrary to what had been arranged.

Unlike their initial agreement, Sir Dante was lodged in a detached annex. The Knights of Aschardt insisted it would be corrupt for him—a close aide to the fiancée—to join their ranks. Even Sir Dante had to concede the absurdity, leaving Natasha with no grounds to protest.

Thus, Natasha alone remained in the main house.

Since they weren’t married yet, the two couldn’t share a bed. Natasha unpacked her modest luggage in her newly assigned room.

Soon after, maids were assigned to assist her with settling in. After unpacking, she bathed in a tub filled with warm water, her mood lulled by the finely infused fragrance.

Her hair, freed from dye, had finally regained its natural color after a long time. Even her eyes, which had been dulled by artifice, returned to their true hue.

‘Today, I’ll finally show His Grace my real self.’

Natasha faintly smiled at the “real” version of herself reflected in the mirror. Her heart fluttered at the thought of finally revealing her true identity—Natasha Charlier—to Zieghart.

Chapter 115 Chapter 114

Yet, to her disappointment, the man never showed up for the evening banquet.

Nor the next morning’s breakfast, nor that evening’s meal. Nor the following day, or the day after that….

Not even on the night before their wedding.

Three weeks.

He had vanished completely for three whole weeks. She realized this was the price for the memories they’d built together, yet she concealed her feelings. She comforted herself, reasoning that he’d neglected estate duties and other responsibilities during their six months together, so he must simply be busy.

Still, pretending not to notice until today seemed excessive. On the eve of their wedding, Natasha couldn’t help but feel bitter toward the man who remained absent.

‘He said he loved me.’

Yet she didn’t doubt his feelings. Their six months together had been too meaningful for that.

Rain or snow, he had always come running to whisper love to her. Whenever trouble arose, he appeared like a hero and resolved everything.

‘It must be because of the wedding preparations. There’s so much to do, and after the marriage, he’ll inevitably neglect his duties, so he’s getting ahead of things…’

His past efforts and sincerity quickly dispelled any negative thoughts. Soon, she found herself eagerly anticipating the wedding the next day.

Dressed in a white wedding gown, Natasha and Zieghart in his crisp suit would exchange vows of eternity under everyone’s blessings. They would place rings—the beautiful chains of love—upon each other’s fingers and share a tender kiss.

‘I wish tomorrow would come soon.’

With that happy thought, she drifted off to sleep,

unaware that the past six months had forged an emotional chain binding her forever, from which there was no escape.

[This is the timeline separator]

Before the woman marching down the aisle holding an eternally unfading bouquet of snowbells, brilliant trumpet fanfares rang out.

Natasha, clad in her wedding gown, walked carefully down the virgin road.

She had no time to marvel at the sight beyond her veil. Of all the grand decorations—fresh flowers, jewels, and opulent displays—it was Zieghart in his dignified attire who drew her eyes.

With her heart swelling, she halted before him. Through the fine mesh of her veil, she stole eager glances at him, hoping he’d notice how beautifully she’d adorned herself.

Yet Zieghart kept his gaze fixed blankly into the distance, his posture and sight unwavering. Embarrassed, she deliberately turned her eyes away, trying to focus on anything else—but despite her efforts, he kept intruding into her vision.

After the ceremonial officiant concluded his rites, the ring bearer approached.

The groom took the ring from the bearer and slipped it onto the bride’s finger. At its center gleamed a blue diamond, symbol of the House of Aschardt. It felt like undeniable proof that Natasha was now officially part of the ducal family, and her heart swelled with emotion.

Having exchanged rings, the two finally met each other’s eyes. There remained only one final rite for the newlyweds.

The ceremonial kiss—the so-called crowning moment of any wedding.

“Now is the time for you both to prove your love.”

At the officiant’s words, Zieghart immediately stepped forward. Her heart, which she’d barely calmed, began racing again as he drew near.

His broad hand brushed against her veil. Gently lifting the lace, he stepped into her space.

Up close, his crimson eyes appeared even more striking. Their eerie intensity made Natasha instinctively tense.

He, too, was studying her red eyes. Seeming fascinated by her appearance—especially her matching crimson gaze—he kept murmuring the word “eyes” under his breath.

Within that confined space, their breaths mingled wildly. A faint, sweet scent heightened the tension.

‘Princess.’

His lips moved silently.

Was that the signal for their kiss? Natasha squeezed her eyes shut as his arms encircled her back and waist.

Strands of hair occasionally brushed against her forehead, tickling her. His breath, now deeper and richer, smelled so sweet she feared she might suffocate from it. Their noses lightly bumped.

Everything drew closer—except their lips.

Puzzled, Natasha slowly opened her eyes.

It wasn’t her imagination. Their lips hadn’t touched at all. He’d merely brought his face close, meticulously maintaining distance between their mouths.

“…”

Ah.

A silent groan escaped through her clenched teeth.

His gaze, as he looked down at her, was utterly cold. His deep-set crimson pupils radiated oppressive authority—as if commanding her to keep her eyes shut.

She caught sight of the guests behind her shoulders. Not wanting to expose the humiliation of their feigned kiss, Natasha obeyed and closed her eyes once more.

Moments later, cheers erupted, followed by congratulatory whispers of blessings. At that, Zieghart abruptly stepped back—as if he’d been waiting for this moment all along.

‘What on earth…’

Natasha clenched her fists tightly.

‘Why?’

To hide the nameless emotion creeping up from her toes—

and to conceal her ill-fitting, loose wedding ring.
