Natasha hurriedly closed the study door. She had wasted too much time and now had no chance to hide herself. There was nowhere left to retreat.

If she hid clumsily and got caught, it would only raise even more suspicion.

With no other choice, she walked confidently toward the open door instead of hiding. Natasha calmly greeted the man who entered right after her.

Kail, who had been grumbling about his advisor’s nagging being bothersome, instantly hardened his expression the moment he stepped into the bedroom—having spotted Natasha Aschardt at the edge of his vision.

The man scowled, seemingly confused whether he was seeing a hallucination brought on by drunkenness.

After a brief pause, Kail finally realized the woman before him was real, not an illusion. Understanding the situation belatedly, he grimaced and burst into harsh laughter.

“So all that whining about pain was just a ruse, huh? You really had ulterior motives, didn’t you?”

Apparently, the Emperor had also heard the news that Duchess Aschardt was unwell.

The man approached Natasha closely, circling her slowly as he fired off questions—with an expression not of panic, but of amused curiosity.

“This place is known only to a select few. How did you manage to find it, sneaking in like some filthy rat?”

“Considering Emperor Your Majesty and Duke Aschardt were once so close, surely it wouldn’t be too difficult to learn the location of the Emperor’s private chamber.”

“Oh, really? I’ve never told anyone who might slit my throat where my bedroom is.”

“Even if Emperor Your Majesty never directly spoke of it, that persistent man wouldn’t have failed to uncover any clues.”

She met his probing question with unwavering composure.

Natasha, evading the issue, stared blankly at the man across from her as if anticipating the conversation’s end. In her wide, unblinking eyes was reflected the figure of Kail Retiers.
