Christoph faintly furrowed his brow. Liam was utterly different from him—from head to toe. Perhaps that was precisely why he disliked him.

He knew this was petty jealousy. Yet he didn’t want to admit it. Acknowledging that fact would also mean admitting that the other man was his rival.

“You seem to have forgotten something. I, too, possess empathy.”

At Christoph’s sullen retort, Marien let out a light laugh.

“Are you still going to harp on about Paul’s incident?”

Her soft laughter couldn’t escape the narrow staircase and lingered there for a long while. Marien listened to the footsteps following behind her. The air around them grew calmer.

They climbed for a while longer. Just as her breath caught in her throat, sunlight poured down from above. Marien stopped right there and finally let out a sigh of relief.

If the bell tower had been just a bit taller, she might have died before reaching the top. Soon after, she stepped into the tower.

“Wow.”

A hushed gasp escaped through Marien’s lips. The landscape below looked dizzyingly distant.

Beneath her feet, houses appeared no bigger than her fingertips. People, no larger than fingernails, bustled about, and a dog smaller than a fingernail darted around.

“Ugh.”

At that moment, a strong gust of wind tousled her hair as it passed by. Overcome by dizziness, Marien pressed her hand against the wall and squeezed her eyes shut.

Get a grip.

Slowly opening her eyes, she tensed her lips, imagining the scene beyond the bell, and took a resolute step forward.
