Yeah, maybe it was obsession or compulsion. Only after Marien—who he’d always assumed would stay by his side without him having to make any effort—disappeared did he realize he might be obsessing over something he felt had been taken from him.

Obsession.

Christoph rolled the word around in his mouth. For some reason, it didn’t quite stick. But no other emotion came to mind.

Obsession and possessiveness.

Marien’s chatter still tickled his ears, and Christoph’s lips relaxed into a faint smile.

It felt as if the nerves he’d kept taut all day—trying not to fall for the old foxes’ flattery—were finally easing.

A lazy sigh slipped out between Christoph’s teeth. He could have fallen asleep right then and there. It was only a shame this place happened to be a dusty entrance hall.

“Counselor.”

Christoph and Marien, walking side by side out of the police station, halted. Marien’s eyes widened as she spotted a car parked at the entrance.

It looked familiar. Oliver, standing straight and composed, approached them with a nod of recognition.

“Isn’t that your car? Looks like Oliver came in your car again. At this point, it might as well be Oliver’s personal vehicle, don’t you think?”

Marien whispered. Instead of answering, Christoph merely gave a slight raise of his eyebrows.

“You seem well, Madam Schneider.”

“Thanks to you. And Oliver’s doing fine too, I hope?”

He responded to Marien’s polite greeting with a smile. Then, in an instant, his expression turned serious. Leaning forward slightly, Oliver lowered his voice.
