“You were right to come after all. If I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes, you wouldn’t have told me what happened to you there.”

Marien replied in a subdued voice.

“Nothing truly unusual happened today. Just a dress code… it wasn’t that big a deal. Besides, I enjoyed myself so much talking with Countess Wolfgang that I lost track of time. Oh, by the way, the Countess invited me to her mansion next week—she said a piece by Kündenski has arrived.”

“Not that big a deal.”

Christoph murmured her words in a languid tone. It meant that in the capital, she’d endured far worse countless times.

Christoph remembered the stares directed at her when they stepped down from the carriage. Their surprise wasn’t just due to his sudden appearance—it was because they’d realized what his coming to fetch Marien truly signified.

Christoph knew, at least vaguely, what rumors were circulating in society: that the two of them were on bad terms and living separately.

It was a story both close to the truth and yet entirely distant from it.

But now Christoph had come to take Marien home himself. That act alone put an end to those rumors.

At the same time, Christoph realized something: the more his heart drifted from Marien, the more precarious her position became.

Of course it was. Marien had neither a title to protect her nor a powerful family to rely on. She was a commoner who had entered a new world through marriage alone.

The only thing shielding her was Christoph’s affection—and he needed to make it unmistakably clear that his heart belonged to her, so no one would dare treat her carelessly.

He’d realized this far too late. His indifference had pushed Marien into danger.

She’d been forced to fight her enemies bare-handed, without even a single piece of armor. She had no weapons and could do nothing but endure their attacks helplessly.
