Christoph called out to her. His voice, languid as if he might fall asleep at any moment, was sensual and overwhelming enough to stir her heart. Instantly, goosebumps prickled across her skin.

Startled, Marien looked around. She sat upright in her chair, back straight.

“I’m fine right here….”

“You intend to spend the night there?”

“I… can’t sleep.”

“Marien.”

Christoph propped his head on one arm and turned his body sideways. He gazed at Marien with his pitch-black eyes. She swallowed hard and nodded.

“Tell me.”

“Tomorrow isn’t a holiday.”

“…What?”

“What I mean is, tomorrow we’ll be running around all day again to catch the culprit. Maintaining your body in peak condition is part of an officer’s duty. If an emergency arises and you can’t make clear-headed decisions due to lack of sleep, wouldn’t that be the height of foolishness?”

“But….”

“If you can’t sleep, just lie down and close your eyes. Even that will help ease your fatigue somewhat.”

Damn it.

Christoph clicked his tongue, worried his voice might have sounded impatient or revealed his hidden intentions. He watched Marien closely—fortunately, she didn’t seem to notice.
