Christoph, who had remained silent until now, interjected. His voice was dry—starkly contrasting Marien’s gentle tone.

“I don’t know how much money you received from the art dealer to commit such an act, but wouldn’t it be better to tell us the truth now? At least, unless you wish to make an enemy of Count Wolfgang’s household.”

“!”

Baroness Sauer’s eyes widened in shock. She parted her lips as if to speak, but nothing emerged except faint, wheezing breaths.

“Don’t forget that Count Wolfgang is the mayor. If he sets his mind to it, uncovering the truth using his connections would be no trouble at all. Wouldn’t it be more advantageous for you to confess to us first, before that happens?”

“Ugh.”

The baroness crumpled her handkerchief in her grip. Marien barely suppressed a smile threatening to escape.

Christoph deliberately maintained an overbearing demeanor. The more intimidating he appeared, the more Marien’s kindness would stand out.

Noticing this, Marien gently soothed the baroness’s fear with an even softer voice.

“We’ll keep everything you say here confidential. Let’s just say you were deceived by Bruno Falkenhein. No—truly, you were deceived by him. You couldn’t have known things would escalate this far. So please, tell us everything you know. Not a single detail left out. Leave the rest to us.”

Just as expected, Baroness Sauer’s eyes flickered rapidly as she looked at Marien. She seemed ready to kneel before Marien’s kindness at any moment.

“Good heavens…”

A sob finally escaped through the baroness’s clenched teeth. She buried her face in her handkerchief. Marien waited patiently.

After regaining her composure, the baroness lifted her head. Her eyes grew desperate, as if she’d realized Marien was her only lifeline.

“I truly was deceived by that man! I had no idea he’d extort twenty-five million gold from the countess! I swear, Madam Schneider—please believe me.”
