She dozed off for a moment. Her consciousness, sinking beneath sleep, slowly stirred awake. What could it be? Marien wondered with her eyes still closed.

Thud.

Just then, an unfamiliar sound struck her eardrum. Yes, that was it. She had awakened because of that sound—a dull yet sharp noise.

As if someone were tapping on the window… Huh? The window?

That couldn’t be. Her room was on the second floor, and it was deep into the night. Then, what on earth could that sound be?

Thud.

Before she could figure it out, the same sound rang out once more. Marien tilted her head in confusion and opened her eyes. She pushed aside the blanket, got up, and walked toward the window.

Perhaps a blind bird had flown into the glass? Or maybe it was flailing helplessly, trapped against the frame? That would be pitiful indeed.

Marien gently drew back the curtain and peered outside.

“!”

In that instant, her eyes widened in astonishment. A familiar silhouette stood beneath her window—unmistakable even in the faint moonlight.

Behind him, she also spotted a carriage halted some distance away.

“Christoph…”

Her lips moved silently. Still staring down blankly, Marien hesitantly opened the window. For a fleeting moment, she thought she saw him smile. She couldn’t be certain in the darkness, but that was the impression she got.

Marien leaned slightly out the window and glanced around before lowering her voice. The neighborhood lay deep in slumber, and her tone carried a hint of bewilderment.
