Timon spoke with unwavering conviction.

“At the time, as you saw in the report, the case was clearly a suicide. I deeply regret Madame Schneider’s distress, but this matter leaves no room for doubt. I don’t understand why you’re bringing it up again now.”

“Why are you so certain? As far as I know, there were no witnesses.”

Marien asked in a flat tone. Timon’s eyes widened in surprise—it was Marien, not Christoph, who had posed the question. He quickly recovered and spoke again.

“Firstly, Miss Veronica Clozier was deeply distraught over a broken heart at the time. According to her roommate, she repeatedly said she wanted to die.”

“Anyone can say that. Saying you want to die and actually doing it are entirely different things, Inspector Penceller.”

Her quiet voice carried unexpected strength. The moment she addressed him by name and title, Timon involuntarily flinched. But he couldn’t back down now.

“Of course, Madame Schneider. However, according to testimonies, her sense of loss was overwhelming. You may or may not believe this, but in my line of work, I’ve encountered countless people—men and women alike—who’ve taken their own lives due to heartbreak. It’s tragic, but that’s the reality. Love can drive people to extremes.”

Marien tightly gripped the hem of her dress. Christoph, who had been leaning sideways with his elbow on the armrest, let his gaze linger briefly on the back of her hand before looking away.

“But there wasn’t a single eyewitness testimony, was there?”

At Christoph’s languid question, Timon straightened his posture with a more tense expression. Clearing his throat once again, he recalled the report and answered.

“It was late at night. It’s not unusual for there to be no witnesses.”

“How can you be so sure it was late at night? Veronica left her dormitory at 4 p.m.”

“That riverside is lined with restaurants and cafes. If someone had fallen in, surely someone would have noticed. Yet no such report came in.”

“On the other hand, it’s also a place where foot traffic dwindles after shops close late at night. So you assumed it must have been late, is that right?”
